Competitive enrichment of comammox Nitrospira in floccular sludge
Water ResearchThe discovery of complete ammonium oxidation (comammox) has subverted the traditional perception of two-step nitrification, which plays a key role in achieving biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. Floccular sludge-based treatment technologies are being applied at the majority of wastewater treatment plants in service where detection of various ...

Phylum BVIII. Nitrospirae phy. nov.
2001The phylum Nitrospirae is based mainly on phylogenetic grounds. At present, it consists of a single class, order, and family of Bacteria and environtaxa that branch deeply in the major reference trees; member taxa consistently group together. Gram-negative, curved, vibrioid or spiral-shaped cells.

Specific Micropollutant Biotransformation Pattern by the Comammox Bacterium Nitrospira inopinata
Environmental Science & Technology, 2019The recently discovered complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria occur in various environments, including wastewater treatment plants. To better understand their role in micropollutant biotransformation in comparison with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), we investigated the biotransformation capability of ...

The environmental detection of comammox Nitrospira

Isolation and immunocytochemical location of the nitrite-oxidizing system in Nitrospira moscoviensis
Archives of Microbiology, 1998A membrane-associated nitrite-oxidizing system of Nitrospira moscoviensis was isolated from heat-treated membranes. The four major proteins of the enzyme fraction had apparent molecular masses of 130, 62, 46, and 29 kDa, respectively. The nitrite-oxidizing activity was dependent on the presence of molybdenum.

Nitrite concentration influences the population structure of Nitrospira ‐like bacteria
Environmental Microbiology, 2006Summary Chemolithoautotrophic nitrite oxidizers of the genus Nitrospira are a monophyletic but diverse group of organisms, are widely distributed in many natural habitats, and play a key role in nitrogen elimination during biological wastewater treatment.

Cyanate utilization by and cryopreservation of Nitrospira moscoviensis
2015Nitrogen is a common element in the universe and necessary for all known forms of life on Earth. The nitrogen cycle is a key process, by which nitrogen is converted in various chemical forms by biological processes. One of the key processes in the nitrogen cycle is nitrification, describing the sequential oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate ...

Comammox Nitrospira clade B contributes to nitrification in soil
Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 2019Abstract Comammox, one nitrifying microorganism carries out the complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate, have been recently discovered, and are found in a wide range of environments, including soil. However, conditions under which they actually contribute to nitrification in soil have not yet been demonstrated.

Comammox Nitrospira are the dominant ammonia oxidizers in the Yangtze estuarine biofilms
Water ResearchBiofilms are indispensable ecological habitats for microbes that have garnered global attention and play a potential role in influencing the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen. However, the biogeochemical significance of biofilms and the mechanisms by which they regulate nitrogen cycling remain elusive.
