Continuous Noise, Intermittent Noise, and Annoyance

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1989
In a within-subjects design, 18 subjects listened to white noise, the intensity of which was controlled by themselves. They were instructed to choose the intensity they experienced as “clearly annoying.” Three kinds of white noise were used: continuous, intermittent regular, and intermittent irregular.

Noise annoyance susceptibility

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1972
Abstract The variations of annoyance due to tape recorded noise have been investigated in a group of 34 normal hearing subjects. It has been found that there are significant differences between subjects in their rating of three different types of noise, 20 s samples of which were played at levels varying from 55–95 dBA.

Neighbourhood noise annoyance

Journal of Environmental Psychology, 1991
Abstract This research attempts to describe the situational parameters of neighbourhood noise which explain the level of annoyance and victims' reactions towards the noise originators. The sample of subjects (N= 284) was constituted so as to allow comparisons between age groups, sex, and three levels of social class.

Traffic noise and annoyance

Environmental Management and Health, 1995
Describes a socio‐psychological study performed in a residential area of Tehran, exposed to both aircraft and traffic noise. Analysis of residents′ responses to road traffic noise shows that although aircraft noise is the chief environmental problem it fails to mask the nuisance of traffic noise.

Comparison between noise annoyance and noise sensitivity

INTER-NOISE and NOISE-CON Congress and Conference Proceedings, 2023
This study examined the relationship between noise sensitivity and noise annoyance. As part of a collaboration between the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan and the National Research Council Canada related to the acoustic requirements for dwellings intended for aging in place, a pilot subjective study of noise ...

Noise, Stress and Annoyance

Noise & Vibration Worldwide, 2006
The effects of sound on man are reviewed with emphasis on the physiological reaction mechanisms and the ultimate stress reaction. It is seen that energy related noise levels are poor predictors for the reactions in man as noise is always interpreted in the central nervous system, generating secondary and tertiary reactions that are not controlled by ...

Annoyance of Noise

2015
Annoyance depends directory on the sound pressure level (SPL) when sounds are roughly equivalent in other attributes, such as timbre and duration. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been spent on noise reduction technologies in relation to reducing sound exposure level.

Aircraft Noise, Hearing Ability, and Annoyance

Archives of Environmental Health: An International Journal, 1995
The relationship between aircraft noise, loss of hearing, and annoyance was explored in a study in two schools located near an international airport in Taiwan. Sixth-grade students (N = 242) were recruited from two schools and were classified into high- and low-noise-exposure groups, based on environmental noise measurements.

Road traffic noise annoyance in Amsterdam

International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, 1985
3445 persons living in Amsterdam (1507 male and 1938 female), aged 41-43 years, participated in an investigation in which the relationship was studied between the (measured) road traffic noise in front of the houses in which the participants lived, and the (reported) resulting annoyance and sleep disturbance.
