New Healthy Low-Sugar and Carotenoid-Enriched/High-Antioxidant Beverage: Study of Optimization and Physicochemical Properties

open access: yesFoods, 2023
Lutein is a prominent biologically active carotenoid pigment with a polyene skeleton that has great benefits for human health. The study examined the synergistic effects of potentially functional components, including lutein carotenoid (LC), Mentha ...

Natural Negative Feedback Loops Confer Indica‐Japonica Differentiation for Grain Size Homeostasis in Rice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals the genetic and molecular mechanisms controlling grain size homeostasis through fine‐tuning OsGRX8 self‐expression by two natural negative feedback loops functioning in redox‐dependent or ‐independent manners and identifies two self‐regulatory haplotypes (SRHs) for the subspecies differentiation in rice.

Maternal Exposure to Non-nutritive Sweeteners Impacts Progeny’s Metabolism and Microbiome

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) are marketed as sugar alternatives providing sweet taste with few or no calories. Yet their consumption has been linked to metabolic dysfunction and changes in the gut microbiome.

Effects of a front-of-package disclosure on accuracy in assessing children’s drink ingredients: two randomised controlled experiments with US caregivers of young children

open access: yesPublic Health Nutrition, 2023
Objective: Test effects of a standardised front-of-package (FOP) disclosure statement (indicating added sugar, non-nutritive sweetener (NNS) and juice content) on accuracy in assessing ingredients and perceived healthfulness of children’s drinks ...

Integration of sweet taste and metabolism determines carbohydrate reward [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Post-ingestive signals related to nutrient metabolism are thought to be the primary drivers of reinforcement potency of energy sources. Here, in a series of neuroimaging and indirect calorimetry human studies, we examine the relative roles of caloric ...

Selenoprotein H Functions as a PPARα Coactivator to Link Selenium Homeostasis to Hepatic Lipid Metabolism and Protect against Steatohepatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Our study identifies selenium deficiency as a hallmark of MASH pathogenesis. Dietary selenium supplementation enhances hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and attenuates MASH progression by activating the PPARα pathway via selenoprotein H (SELENOH). This selenium‐SELENOH‐PPARα nexus redefines the functional scope of selenoproteins, moving from redox ...

Sugar Replacement in Chocolate-Flavored Milk: Differences in Consumer Segments’ Liking of Sweetener Systems Relate to Temporal Perception

open access: yesBeverages
Chocolate-flavored milk contributes to excessive intake of added sugars among children and adolescents, which why it is a good candidate product for sucrose replacement. This study investigates how replacing sucrose partially or completely with different

Gut Microbe‐Driven Resistance Mechanisms in Propylea Japonica: Insights from Horizontal Gene Transfer and Oxidative Phosphorylation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Acinetobacter regulates dinotefuran tolerance in Propylea japonica by mediating the expression of the horizontally transferred gene PjDUF1. Abstract Insect–microbial symbiont relationships are widespread in nature and often involve lateral gene transfer.
