Solid behavior of anisotropic rigid frictionless bead assemblies [PDF]
We investigate the structure and mechanical behavior of assemblies of frictionless, nearly rigid equal-sized beads, in the quasistatic limit, by numerical simulation.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Taking into account the non-proportional loading effect on high cycle fatigue life predictions obtained by invariant-based approaches [PDF]
Industrial structures are often subjected to multiaxial fatigue loadings. If the multiple stress signals are not synced the loading is said to be non-proportional.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Cyclic Deformation and Low-Cycle Fatigue for 316LN Stainless Steel under Non-proportional Loading [PDF]
The effects of loading path and strain amplitude ratio on the cyclic behavior and fatigue life were investigated on a 316LN nuclear grade stainless steel employing a series of symmetrically strain-controlled fatigue tests at room temperature. The loading

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Fatigue failure analysis of vibrating screen spring by means of finite element simulation: a case study [PDF]
Vibrating screens are often used in the mining industry to separate mineral particles by size. In many designs, spring arrays are used to provide the system with the necessary stiffness for screens to vibrate in a controlled manner.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of the mesoscopic high cycle fatigue strength of FCC metals with polycrystalline plasticity and extreme value probability methods [PDF]
This study analyzes the influence of microstructure properties on the extreme value distributions of the fatigue indicator parameter (FIP) corresponding to the multiaxial HCF Dang Van criterion.

Free-Boundary Dynamics in Elasto-plastic Amorphous Solids: The Circular Hole Problem
We develop an athermal shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of plastic deformation in spatially inhomogeneous, amorphous solids. Our ultimate goal is to describe the dynamics of the boundaries of voids or cracks in such systems when they are subjected ...
