The human skeleton has remarkable regenerative properties, being one of the few structures in the body that can heal by recreating its normal cellular composition, orientation and mechanical strength. When the healing process of a fractured bone fails owing to inadequate immobilization, failed surgical intervention, insufficient biological response or ...

Injury, 2005
A substantial number of experimental and clinical studies have established that the cornerstones for successful bone-healing are biomechanical stability and biological vitality of the bone, as they both provide an environment in which new bone can be formed. Non-union of long bones is a significant consequence in treating fractures.

A non-union is a fracture that fails to heal within the expected time frame and occurs in approximately 3 to 5% of all fractures. Non-union has a negative impact on mental and physical functioning and quality of life. The causes, clinical presentation and treatment for non-union differ strongly on a case-by-case basis.

Non-union in osteogenesis imperfecta
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics B, 2005A retrospective study of 44 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta treated over a 14-year period was undertaken to determine the frequency and pattern of non-unions of long bones in these patients. Nine non-unions were encountered in eight patients.

Non-union of acetabular fractures
Injury, 2004Non-unions of acetabulum are rare. Seven cases of acetabular non-unions are reported in this retrospective study. Five out of our seven patients had either transverse or associated transverse with posterior wall fractures. All patients had surgical stabilisation of their index fractures.

Non-Union in Forearm Fractures
Acta chirurgiae orthopaedicae et traumatologiae Cechoslovaca, 2014Non-union in forearm fractures is an uncommon but complex problem. This is especially given the unique anatomical structure and function of the forearm, making treatment distinctly different to that of other long bone fractures. Anatomical restoration of length, alignment, rotation and the radial bow maintains the optimal stabilising effects of the ...
