Automatic rational approximation and linearization of nonlinear eigenvalue problems [PDF]

open access: yesIMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, 2018
We present a method for solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems (NEPs) using rational approximation. The method uses the Antoulas–Anderson algorithm (AAA) of Nakatsukasa, Sète and Trefethen to approximate the NEP via a rational eigenvalue problem.

Algorithms and error bounds for multivariate piecewise constant approximation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We review the surprisingly rich theory of approximation of functions of many vari- ables by piecewise constants. This covers for example the Sobolev-Poincar´e inequalities, parts of the theory of nonlinear approximation, Haar wavelets and tree ...

Implementing nonlinear Compton scattering beyond the local-constant-field approximation [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review A, 2017
In the calculation of probabilities of physical processes occurring in a background classical field, the local-constant-field approximation (LCFA) relies on the possibility of neglecting the space-time variation of the external field within the region of

Nonlinear Approximation Using Gaussian Kernels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
It is well-known that non-linear approximation has an advantage over linear schemes in the sense that it provides comparable approximation rates to those of the linear schemes, but to a larger class of approximands.

Justification of the log-KdV equation in granular chains: the case of precompression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
For travelling waves with nonzero boundary conditions, we justify the logarithmic Korteweg-de Vries equation as the leading approximation of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice with Hertzian nonlinear potential in the limit of small anharmonicity.

Nonlinear Methods for Model Reduction

open access: yes, 2020
The usual approach to model reduction for parametric partial differential equations (PDEs) is to construct a linear space $V_n$ which approximates well the solution manifold $\mathcal{M}$ consisting of all solutions $u(y)$ with $y$ the vector of ...

Nonlinear magnetic response of the magnetized vacuum to applied electric field [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We find first nonlinear correction to the field, produced by a static charge at rest in a background constant magnetic field. It is quadratic in the charge and purely magnetic.

Nonlinear quasi-normal modes: uniform approximation

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2023
Recent works have suggested that nonlinear (quadratic) effects in black hole perturbation theory may be important for describing a black hole ringdown.

Medical Image Fusion Algorithm Based on Nonlinear Approximation of Contourlet Transform and Regional Features

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2017
According to the pros and cons of contourlet transform and multimodality medical imaging, here we propose a novel image fusion algorithm that combines nonlinear approximation of contourlet transform with image regional features.

An Iterative Method Based on the Marginalized Particle Filter for Nonlinear B-Spline Data Approximation and Trajectory Optimization

open access: yesMathematics, 2019
The B-spline function representation is commonly used for data approximation and trajectory definition, but filter-based methods for nonlinear weighted least squares (NWLS) approximation are restricted to a bounded definition range.
