A novel reduced‐order modeling method for nonlinear buckling analysis and optimization of geometrically imperfect cylinders

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2020
A novel reduced‐order modeling method with two‐step strategy is proposed for nonlinear buckling analysis of axially compressed thin‐walled cylinder. The nonlinear response analysis up until the buckling point is achieved quickly by solving the small ...

Nonlinear Asymmetric Buckling of Truncated Spherical Shells

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1970
This paper is concerned with the theoretical study of buckling of truncated spherical shells. Sander’s nonlinear equations for deep shells are used and the equations of equilibrium are expressed in terms of displacements for spherical shells. Based on these equations, analyses are made for calculating prebuckling axisymmetric equilibrium positions and ...

Nonlinear buckling of thin-walled FGM arch encased in rigid confinement subjected to external pressure

Engineering structures, 2019
This paper investigates the buckling of confined thin-walled functionally graded material (FGM) arch subjected to external pressure. The confined FGM arch buckles in a single-lobe deformation expressed by an admissible radial displacement function.

Nonlinear buckling analysis of composite shells

15th Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 1974
An incremental finite element procedure is presented for nonlinear buckling (collapse) analysis of composite shells undergoing large elastic deformations. The type of element employed is a modified version of Clough-Felippa's quadrilateral shell element. The element is made of any number of rigidly bonded orthotropic layers of different thicknesses and

Nonlinear Isometric Bifurcation and Shell Buckling

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1977
AbstractA simple concept for studying the lower stability limit of shell structures which is based on the theory of isometric transformation of surfaces is outlined. The influence of imperfection on the lower stability limit is discussed in the case of axially compressed cylindrical shells.

Nonlinear Cyclic Behavior of Reinforcing Bars Including Buckling

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1992
The effects of inelastic buckling on monotonic and cyclic behavior of reinforcing steel bars are studied. Experimental tests show that this phenomenon occurs when the ratio between length and diameter of the bar exceeds 5, and that it leads to a postyield softening branch in compression that strongly influences the cyclic behavior of the bar.

Nonlinear buckling of cylindrical shells

Computers & Structures, 1972
A method is presented for the study of the nonlinear buckling of shallow cylindrical shells. The governing differential equations are expressed in terms of a stress function and the normal displacement. The Kantorovitch method and a finite difference scheme are applied to solve the resulting set of nonlinear differential equations.

Buckling and Nonlinear Analysis of Conoidal Shells

Volume 8: 28th Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, 2016
Slender shell structures described by ruled surfaces have been frequently used in civil engineering and, among these slender shells, conoidal shells are frequently favored as roofing units to cover large column-free areas due to their ease of construction, aesthetic value and structural efficiency. This work studies the nonlinear post-buckling behavior

Isogeometric analysis for nonlinear buckling of FGM plates under various types of thermal gradients

Thin-walled structures, 2019
This study attempts at analyzing buckling responses of functionally graded material (FGM) plates under diverse types of thermal loadings. An accurate and effective numerical approach based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) to predict the nonlinear thermal ...

Nonlinear Buckling Analysis of Sandwich Arches

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1971
An incremental displacement formulation for the nonlinear finite element analysis of sandwich arches is presented. The formulation permits the analysis of geometrically nonlinear problems with finite rotations but infinitesimal strains. The finite element model employed is a straight beam-column type, and has a three-layered sandwich construction with ...
