A Nonlinear Finite Volume Scheme Preserving Maximum Principle for Diffusion Equations

Communications in Computational Physics, 2021
Summary: In this paper we propose a new nonlinear cell-centered finite volume scheme on general polygonal meshes for two dimensional anisotropic diffusion problems, which preserves discrete maximum principle (DMP). The scheme is based on the so-called diamond scheme with a nonlinear treatment on its tangential flux to obtain a local maximum principle ...

The maximum principle, semicontinuity and nonlinear PDE's

29th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 1990
Scalar, fully nonlinear, second-order partial differential equations arise in stochastic control and the theory of stochastic differential games. The proper notion of solution of these equations and associated questions of uniqueness of these solutions (subject perhaps to boundary conditions) have evolved in a striking way and have many applications in

Maximum principles for nonlinear elliptic equations in unseparated variables

2011 International Conference on Consumer Electronics, Communications and Networks (CECNet), 2011
This paper is devoted to a class of nonlinear elliptic equations posed by Schaefer in 1977. We obtain maximum principles for certain functions, which are defined on solutions of the elliptic equations in unseparated variables form. The principles may be used to deduce some bounds on important quantities in physical problems of interest.

Strong maximum principle for nonlinear cooperative elliptic systems

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2019
In this article is considered the validity of the strong interior and the strong boundary maximum principle for cooperative quasi-linear weakly coupled systems of elliptic PDE’s. The results are obtained via linearization of the system.

A Practical Approach to Nonlinear Estimation by Using the Maximum Entropy Principle

Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 1986
The problem of estimating the state of a continuous markovian process in the presence of nonlinear observation (nonlinear filtering) may be considered as being completely solved on a theoretical standpoint. All the difficulties arise in the practical applications which require new ways of investigation: search for special approaches related to special ...

On the maximum and comparison principles for a steady‐state nonlinear heat conduction problem

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2003
AbstractWe examine a Dirichlet boundary value problem of elliptic type which serves as a model for a stationary heat conduction in nonlinear, inhomogeneous, and anisotropic media. We prove a comparison principle and obtain the maximum principle as a direct consequence.

Nonlinear Roesser Problem with a Terminal Condition. Maximum Principle

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1997
Abstract In the paper, necessary optimality conditions for an autonomous continuous Roesser system nonlinear in a state, with a pointwise terminal condition, are derived.

Joint maximum principle in the problem of synthesizing an optimal control of nonlinear systems

Automatic Control and Computer Sciences, 2007
The problem of optimization of dynamic systems is considered. It is shown that, unlike the well-known methods of optimal control, through use of the maximum principle it becomes possible to synthesize an efficient control law that substantially reduces computational complexity, as is demonstrated by the results of numerical simulation.
