Nonlinear Refractive Index Of Glasses And Crystals

Optical Engineering, 1978
The propagation of intense optical beams through dielectric media induces changes in the refractive index which cause self-focusing and beam breakup in high-power laser systems. After a brief discussion of the origin and spatial anisotropy of refractive-index nonlinearities, methods for measuring the nonlinear refractive index coefficient are reviewed.

Nonlinear refractive index of solids in mid-infrared

Optics Letters, 2021
We measure the third-order nonlinear optical response of various dielectrics and semiconductors using the spectrally resolved two-beam coupling method at 2.3 µm, 3.5 µm, 4.5 µm, and 8.3 µm. These materials include fused silica, sapphire, calcium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, zinc sulphide, and zinc selenide.

Nonlinear refractive index of optical crystals

Physical Review B, 1989
The nonlinear refractive indices (${n}_{2}$) of a large number of optical crystals have been measured at a wavelength near one micrometer with use of nearly degenerate three-wave mixing. The measurements are compared with the predictions of an empirical formula derived by Boling, Glass, and Owyoung.

Dispersion of the nonlinear refractive index in sapphire

Optics Letters, 2004
The nonlinear refractive index, n2, of sapphire was experimentally measured in the 550-1550-nm wavelength range by use of a picosecond Z-scan technique. It was found that in this spectral region the value of n2 decreases monotonically from approximately 3.3 x 10(-16) to approximately 2.8 x 10(-16) cm2/W.

Nonlinear index of refraction in semiconductors

Il Nuovo Cimento D, 1984
Experimental work on light refraction in semiconductors suggests that there are two separate mechanisms by which the index of refraction becomes nonlinear: direct saturation, on the one hand, and the Burstein-Moss effect, on the other hand. We show that this picture is incorrect, since it was based on the usage of the Bloch equation.

The nonlinear refractive index of glass

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1974
The general theory of the third-order electronic susceptibility has been specialized to some model systems in order to evaluate the associated nonlinear refractive index of solid materials. The results indicate oppositely signed terms of comparable magnitude, and it is found that the dominant positive contribution involves oscillator strengths ...

Nonlinear refractive index of photo-thermo-refractive glass

Optical Materials, 2006
Abstract Nonlinear properties of a photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass are studied and compared with those in fused silica and a conventional optical glass. PTR glass is a new photosensitive medium for high-efficiency phase volume hologram recording which manifests a linear refractive index modulation after exposure to UV radiation followed by ...

Nonlinear refractive index of fluoride crystals

Applied Physics Letters, 1977
Nonlinear refractive-index coefficients of 11 fluoride crystals were measured at 1064 nm using time-resolved interferometry. A simple empirical expression is given for the index nonlinearity in terms of the d-line refractive index and Abbé number which agrees with measured values for both fluoride crystals and optical glasses and which can be used to ...

Dispersion of nonlinear index of refraction of CS2

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1986
We have measured the nonlinear refractive index of CS2 in the 9-11-μm spectral region. We employed the same technique used in Ref. 1, which is to monitor the onset of whole beam self-focusing by observing the photoacoustic signal in an optically thick cell of room temperature, liquid CS2.

A Nonlinear Microresonator Refractive Index Sensor

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2015
We propose an ultrasensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on the nonlinear index of refraction in a microring resonator coupled to waveguides in an add-drop configuration. The nonreciprocity caused by the difference between the nonlinear self-phase and cross-phase modulation leads to a bifurcation of the optical intensities for two ...
