Nonlinearity of the refractive index of doped insulators

Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1985
Relationships are obtained for the nonlinear resonant polarization of a multilevel system in the field of a monochromatic light wave under noncoherent interaction conditions allowing for anharmonicity of the electron oscillator and the dynamic Stark shift.

Measurements of the anisotropic nonlinear refractive-index coefficients of ruby

Optics Letters, 1990
The real part n(2)' of the complex nonlinear refractive-index coefficients of ruby crystal (Cr(3+):Al(2)O(3)) are measured by the Mach-Zehnder interferometric method. The n(2)' values measured at 514.5 nm for the light polarization perpendicular (sigma) and parallel (pi) to the crystal c axis are (2.81 +/- 0.36) 10(-8) and (1.33 +/- 0.17) x 10(-8) cm(2)

Measurement of the nonlinear refractive index of fibers with a rotating nonlinear Sagnac interferometer

Applied Optics, 1997
We developed a method to measure the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient of fibers using a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer. To enhance the measurement accuracy, we employed a phase-sensitive detection technique using a rotational sensitive property of the Sagnac interferometer. The measured values were reproducible to within 10 % accuracy.

Measurements of a nonlinear refractive index with a single laser pulse

Applied Optics, 1997
We demonstrate a theoretical model and the experimental proof of a new method for n(2) measurements using single pulses. The advantage of the method is fast measurement, a simple setup, and independence from small nonlinear absorptions and thermal effects.

Higher-order nonlinearity of refractive index: The case of argon

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2014
The nonlinear coefficients, n4, of the time-dependent refractive index for argon are calculated in the non-resonant optical regime. Second-order polynomial fitting of DC-Kerr, γ(2)(−ω; ω, 0, 0), electric field induced second harmonic generation (ESHG), γ(2)(−2ω; ω, ω, 0), and static second-order hyperpolarizability, γ(2)(0; 0, 0, 0), is performed using

Continuous-wave measurement of the fiber nonlinear refractive index

Optics Letters, 1998
We propose a technique for measuring the nonlinear refractive index of fiber based on transmission-coefficient measurements in a fiber Sagnac interferometer. In contrast with traditional methods, the proposed method uses a single optical source operating in cw mode and direct intensity measurement, enabling one to avoid the errors caused by fiber ...

Nonlinearities in Negative Refractive Index Media

Nonlinear Optics: Materials, Fundamentals and Applications, 2007
We will review the progress made in the area of nonlinear phenomena and negative refractive index metamaterials. We will also discuss recent studies on susceptibility, wave-mixing and other nonlinear resonance properties of metamaterials.

Polarization-dependent nonlinear refractive index of BiB3O6

Optical Materials, 2008
Abstract The nonlinear refractive index of the monoclinic biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB3O6 (BIBO) was measured at 1064 nm for light polarization along the three principal optical axes using the single-beam z-scan technique. Strong anisotropy was observed with n2 values about two-times larger for polarization parallel to the Z-axis in comparison to ...

Refraction Modulation Z-Scan for Measurement of Nonlinear Refractive Index

Ukrainian Journal of Physics
We present a novel single-beam refraction-modulation Z-scan technique that combines elements of the standard Z-scan and loss-modulation methods to enable sensitive measurement of third-order refractive nonlinearities in the closed-aperture configuration. Compared with the original Z-scan technique, the proposed method provides an almost background-free

Nonlinear refractive index of CS2 at 10 μm

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1987
The reported values of the nonlinear refractive index n(l) of CS2 near 10 μm differ by 3 orders of magnitude, and the mechanisms responsible for the nonlinearity are not understood.1 We measure n(l) for CS2 directly by observing the deflection of a CO2 laser beam which traverses a prismatic cell filled with CS2 as a function of intensity up to 10 MW ...
