Microphysics and Kinematics of a High Flash Rate Storm With a Bottom‐Heavy Charge Structure

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract An atypical thunderstorm with unusual lightning and charge structure characteristics propagated through Cordoba province, Argentina, during the austral warm season in late 2018. This storm exhibited echo tops near 10.5 km, with high lightning activity concentrated at low altitudes.

Enhanced Retrieval of Raindrop Size Distribution by Integrating Disdrometer Observations and Atmospheric Variables With Machine Learning

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Accurate representation of raindrop size distribution (DSD) is crucial for understanding precipitation microphysics and improving quantitative precipitation forecasting. Conventional methods in numerical models often prescribe the DSD shape parameter as a constant or derive it from empirical relationships based solely on disdrometer ...

How Well Can the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Satellite Mission Observe Irrigation Canals?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract The capability of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite for observing irrigation canals has remained relatively unexplored. Here, we assess SWOT observability of irrigation canal networks across 22 Asian countries using a new confidence level (CL) metric.
