Non-Gaussian behaviour of a self-propelled particle on a substrate

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2009
The overdamped Brownian motion of a self-propelled particle which is driven by a projected internal force is studied by solving the Langevin equation analytically. The "active" particle under study is restricted to move along a linear channel.

Insurance loss model vs. meteorological loss index – how comparable are their loss estimates for European windstorms? [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
Windstorms affecting Europe are among the natural hazards with the largest socio-economic impacts. Therefore, many sectors like society, the economy, or the insurance industry are highly interested in reliable information on associated impacts and losses.

From Gradient Clipping to Normalization for Heavy Tailed SGD

open access: yesCoRR
Recent empirical evidence indicates that many machine learning applications involve heavy-tailed gradient noise, which challenges the standard assumptions of bounded variance in stochastic optimization. Gradient clipping has emerged as a popular tool to handle this heavy-tailed noise, as it achieves good performance in this setting both theoretically ...

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

Conformational exchange contributions to the NMR line widths of NTAIL upon interaction with XD.

open access: yes, 2013
(A) Secondary Cα chemical shifts of NTAIL. (B)–(D) Intensity profiles of the 1H-15N HSQC spectra of NTAIL with different amounts of XD: 7.5% (B), 30% (C), 440% (D). The profiles are calculated as I/I0, where I are the intensities in the spectrum of NTAIL

Self-Normalized Sums and Directional Conclusions

open access: yes, 2012
This thesis consists of a summary and five papers, dealing with self-normalized sums of independent, identically distributed random variables, and three-decision procedures for directional conclusions.

Blocking p38 Signaling Reduces the Activation of Pro-inflammatory Cytokines and the Phosphorylation of p38 in the Habenula and Reverses Depressive-Like Behaviors Induced by Neuroinflammation

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2018
Increasing evidence has demonstrated that neuroinflammation contributes to the development of depressive-like behaviors, in both animal models and human patients; however, the brain areas and signaling pathways involved are still elusive.

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Conditional quantiles and tail dependence

open access: yes, 2015
Conditional quantile estimation is a crucial step in many statistical problems. For example, the recent work on systemic risk relies on estimating risk conditional on an institution being in distress or conditional on being in a crisis (Adrian and ...
