Solar cycle modulation of the seasonal linkage of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2003
The influence of the winter NAO on the high‐latitude summer climate is examined by separating the years according to the 11‐year solar cycle. During the solar maximum years, the winter NAO has a significant relation with the spring‐summer climate, while the winter‐to‐summer linkage is very weak during the solar minimum years.

Impact of the wintertime North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the summertime atmospheric circulation [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2003
Using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset and other observations, we show that the summer high‐latitude climate in the Northern Hemisphere is influenced by the NAO of the previous winter. We find this influence in the summertime surface air temperature, the geopotential height, the sea surface temperature (SST), sea‐ice/continental snow cover extent ...

New insights into decadal climate variability in the North Atlantic revealed by data-driven dynamical models [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics
The Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are the dominant modes of oceanic and atmospheric variability in the North Atlantic, respectively, and are key sources of predictability from seasonal to decadal ...

The North Atlantic Oscillation and the North Atlantic Jet Variability: Precursors to NAO Regimes and Transitions

open access: yesJournal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2012
Abstract In this paper, precursors to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and its transitions are investigated to understand the dynamical cause of the interdecadal NAO variability from dominant negative (NAO−) events during 1950–77 (P1) to dominant positive (NAO+) events during 1978–2010 (P2).

Investigating the impact of El Niño Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation on temperature regime in the Republic of Azerbaijan [PDF]

open access: yesGeographica Pannonica
The study aims to investigate recent changes in the climate of Azerbaijan and climate drivers behind these changes. To reveal the combined influences of multiple climate oscillations, it was decided to employ regression models with climate ...

A new Rossby Wave-breaking interpretation of the North Atlantic Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper proposes the hypothesis that the low-frequency variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) arises as a result of variations in the occurrence of upper-level Rossby wave–breaking events over the North Atlantic.

Persistent Model Biases in the Spatial Variability of Winter North Atlantic Atmospheric Circulation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
The three leading modes of the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation explain about 70% of the winter climate variability. Although climate models generally can capture these modes, biases may induce large uncertainties in regional climate predictions ...

Frequent, Intense and Prolonged Human‐Perceived Heat Waves Over the Arabian Peninsula in Recent Decades

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The spatial distribution of WBGT exhibits a widespread and significant warming trend across the Arabian Peninsula (AP), with, particularly, strong increases observed over the central and northern inland and eastern coastal regions of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, where trends exceed ~0.25°C decade−1.

Summer snow extent heralding of the winter North Atlantic Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
[1] Winter climate over the North Atlantic and European sector is modulated by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We find that the summer extent of snow cover over northern North America and northern Eurasia is linked significantly (p < 0.01) to the ...

Recent observed changes in severe storms over the United Kingdom and Iceland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Severe storms defined as 3-hourly pressure changes exceeding an extreme magnitude, were carefully manually quality-controlled and analyzed at stations in the UK and Iceland which had at least 45 years of digitized data.
