CNN-based forecasting of early winter NAO using sea surface temperature

open access: yesEnvironmental Data Science
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric variability over the North Atlantic, influencing temperature and precipitation across Europe.

An alterative effect by the tropical North Atlantic SST in intraseasonally varying El Niño teleconnection over the North Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yesTellus: Series A, Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2013
It is known that there is a distinct intraseasonal variation in wintertime atmospheric responses to El Niño over the North Atlantic, namely a positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-like response during early winter (November to December) and a ...

Asymmetry in the effect of North Atlantic sea surface temperature on the eddy‐driven jet

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Projections of climate over Europe and the Atlantic are uncertain due to the uncertainty surrounding future changes in North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Here, we demonstrate that warming in the North Atlantic Ocean is linked to a transition to a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, as well as to an equatorward displacement of

Structural changes in the interannual variability of extreme autumn precipitation in eastern Spain and the weakening of synoptic forcing

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Total autumn precipitation in eastern Spain remains stable between 1950 and 2024, masking a substantial internal redistribution between ordinary and extreme rainfall. While torrential precipitation (Rp95) increases and ordinary precipitation (Ro) decreases, the extreme contribution index (Cext) shows a significant positive trend and a structural shift ...

Future changes in the wintertime ENSO-NAO teleconnection under greenhouse warming

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection to the Euro-Atlantic exhibits strong subseasonal variations, as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) response systematically reverses its phase from early to late winter. Based on two sets of atmospheric

Attribution of subseasonal cold‐spell forecasts to remote drivers using nudging experiments

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Nudging experiments with the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model show that Northern European cold spells can arise from different drivers. Some events are predominantly influenced by stratospheric dynamics, while others also involve important tropospheric processes.

Synoptic and large‐scale drivers of extreme precipitation events in the Himalayas

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Months associated with maximum frequency of extreme precipitation events (EPEs). 6102 extreme precipitation days (i.e., exceeding 99th percentile for daily precipitation) occurred across the Karakoram, Western Himalayas (WH), Central Himalayas (CH) and Eastern Himalayas (EH) during 1979 to 2023.

The 2026 cold wave brought northern Fennoscandia its coldest 2‐week period since 1987

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
During late December 2025 and January 2026, a severe and long‐lasting cold wave affected northern Fennoscandia. In this article, we aim to quantify the extremity of the 2026 cold wave and evaluate the atmospheric conditions that led to the persistent cold anomalies.

Decadal Predictability of the North Atlantic Eddy‐Driven Jet in Winter

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
This paper expands on work showing that the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is predictable on decadal timescales to quantify the skill in capturing the North Atlantic eddy‐driven jet's location and speed.

Cenozoic Tectonics Ignite Mitochondrial Codon Innovations Propelling Canid Body Size Evolution and Transcontinental Radiations

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We decode mitochondrial genomes across all extant canids, revealing lineage‐specific codon optimization driven by altitude, predation, and body size. A tripartite framework integrates geological events, metabolic constraints, and adaptive radiation to explain carnivore evolution.
