Neolithic ceramic spoons – indicators of dietary distinctiveness in the eastern Adriatic Neolithic?

open access: yesDocumenta Praehistorica, 2015
Among the rich and diverse archaeological finds collected at more than fifty known Neolithic sites in the entire area of the eastern Adriatic and its hinterland, ceramic spoons comprise a group of very rare and almost marginalised items.

Holocene vegetation change and fire–plant diversity shifts in Mediterranean France

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Changes in fire activity are recognized as a major threat to biodiversity and vegetation communities across the Mediterranean Basin. However, long‐term fire–vegetation interactions remain poorly investigated. Here, we combine a high‐resolution charcoal record with pollen data from the “Étang des Aulnes” lake (southern France) to reconstruct ...

Invertebrates' metabolic responses to climate warming scenarios in the Adriatic Sea

open access: yesEcological Indicators
The unprecedented climate warming is profoundly altering marine life. Metabolic rate, a key organismal trait, serves as an ecological indicator of species' responses to the temperature-driven impacts of climate change, across levels of biological ...

New Hope for the Critically Endangered Common Angel Shark Squatina squatina in the Adriatic Sea

open access: yesCroatian Journal of Fisheries, 2022
Historically, two angel shark species, common angel shark Squatina squatina and smoothback angel shark Squatina oculata, were common in the upper continental shelf of the eastern Adriatic Sea. Although both species are considered critically endangered in

Farmers versus wolves: how geographic, social cognitive, and experiential factors influence attitudes towards a predator in Italy

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
A survey of 426 Italian farmers reveals that tolerance toward wolves varies geographically, with northern regions showing less acceptance. Negative intentions were linked to poor knowledge, while use of preventive methods fostered positive beliefs. These findings highlight the need for region‐specific, socially informed wolf management strategies in ...

Stand Age, Standard Retention Density and Site Conditions as Drivers of Shoot Biomass Accumulation in Mediterranean Oak Coppices

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mediterranean oak coppices represent an important fuelwood resource in Central Italy, but management decisions are often constrained by limited quantitative evidence on the relative importance of stand development, standard retention, site conditions, and climate in driving shoot biomass accumulation.

Spatio-temporal patterns of whiting (Merlangius merlangus) in the Adriatic Sea under environmental forcing.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Understanding how environmental factors affect species distribution is crucial for the conservation and management of marine organisms, especially in the face of global changes. Whiting (Merlangius merlangus) is a demersal cold-temperate fish, considered

Repeated Pleistocene Permafrost Episodes in the Western Pannonian Basin

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Concerning the study of past periglacial processes, the Pannonian Basin is a key area as it contains the southernmost frost polygons found in Central Europe. The presence or absence of permafrost is still, however, a matter of debate, and data on the timing of frost action are also scarce.

Ecological incidents in Northern Adriatic Karst (Croatia)

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2000
In spite of growing efforts to preserve the quality of groundwater resources, accidental pollution is becoming increasingly frequent, resulting in long-lasting impact on the groundwater status. The consequences of ecological accidents are particularly expressed in karst regions, which are caused by the geological properties of the area where the ...

Dry intrusions and warm‐core development in Medicanes: Insights from a multi‐case analysis and the peculiar evolution of Ianos

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Mediterranean tropical‐like cyclones show a clear seasonality, with September cyclones exhibiting the deepest convection and Ianos representing the most extreme case. While one or more dry intrusions are typically detected during the cyclone life cycle, Ianos instead features two much weaker descending airflows.
