51-nm Uniform-Intensity Tuning of Superstructure Grating Active-DBR Laser for 2-μm Wavelength Band

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2022
To suppress the fluctuation of light intensity during wavelength tuning caused by carrier induced optical loss, we utilized a single quantum well (SQW) inserted into the bulk core layer of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), called an active DBR ...

Business Model and Sustainable Development Goals for an Innovative Agricultural Waste Management: Distributed Biogas Production

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Technological progress and population growth have increased global pork demand; leading to a rise of methane emission from pig farming, a key contributor to climate change. Anaerobic digestion offers a sustainable solution by converting manure into biogas.

Gate-controlled electromechanical backaction induced by a quantum dot

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Coupling between quantum structures and mechanical resonators remains a challenge. Here, the authors couple a quantum dot and a piezoelectric microresonator and show that gate-induced single electron transport in the quantum dot enables control of the ...

Electrification and Child Work: Direct and Spillover Effects in Ethiopia

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While electrification is often promoted for improving adults' labor supply, its effect on child work remains underexplored. Using four waves of Ethiopian panel data, we examine how electrification affects children's work time. By differentiating between households with and without own electricity access within electrified communities, we ...

Quantitative analysis of optical network unit sleep technique with maintained latency for asymmetric usage by residential users

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2013
This study provides an insight into the effectiveness of an optical network unit (ONU) sleep technique, where a subcomponent of the ONU is powered down during the absence of input traffic.

Interpersonal physiological synchrony is associated with first person and third person subjective assessments of excitement during cooperative joint tasks

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Interpersonal physiological synchrony has been shown to play important roles in social activities. While most studies have shed light on the effects of physiological synchrony on recognition of the group state, such as cohesion or togetherness, the ...

In Vitro Reconstruction of Axonal Heat Sensing with a Photothermal Nerve‐on‐a‐Chip

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A photothermal nerve‐on‐a‐chip platform is presented that enables precise, localized heating of sensory axons with simultaneous electrical recording. The system reveals millisecond‐scale dynamics of heat‐evoked neural activity and provides a new approach to study how temperature‐dependent ion channel behavior is translated into axonal firing.

The Combined Effect of Gas Phase and Condensed Phase Mechanisms in Flame Retardancy of Polybutylene Succinate

open access: yesJournal of Vinyl and Additive Technology, EarlyView.
A combination of DOPO and APP flame‐retardants results in a V‐0 UL 94 rating. ABSTRACT In this study, we addressed the challenge of eliminating, during combustion, the flaming dripping behavior of polybutylene succinate flame retarded with ammonium polyphosphate, a key barrier to achieving a V‐0 rating in the UL 94 flammability test without excessive ...

Visualization of 3D cable between utility poles obtained from laser scanning point clouds: a case study

open access: yesSN Applied Sciences, 2021
We can automate inspection work of infrastructure facilities by analyzing the characteristics of 3D structure information obtained through 3D structure visualization using a point cloud. The safety level of equipment can then be diagnosed quantitatively.
