The nucleobases

Journal of Writing in Creative Practice, 2014
Abstract ‘The Nucleobases’ is a modular, acrostic poem, written according to a burdensome constraint, in which the molecular structure of the nucleotides in DNA determines not only the selected lexicons (which, in this case, consist only of nine-letter words), but also their arrangement in the line.

Reversal of nucleobase methylation by dioxygenases

Nature Chemical Biology, 2020
The repertoire of nucleobase methylation in DNA and RNA, introduced by chemical agents or enzymes, is large. Most methylation can be reversed either directly by restoration of the original nucleobase or indirectly by replacement of the methylated nucleobase with an unmodified nucleobase.

Nucleobase-Containing Gelators

2005
Nucleobases are nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds and have high ability to form directionally controlled multiple intermolecular interaction, i.e., in-plane multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions and stacking interactions perpendicular to the plane. Here the recent development of nucleobase-containing low molecular mass gelators in aqueous and organic

Pulsed supersonic beams with nucleobases

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2012
The dissolution of the primary nucleobases in supercritical fluids has been investigated using pulsed molecular beam mass spectrometry. Due to the low critical temperatures of ethylene and carbon dioxide, their adiabatic jet expansion permits transferring thermally sensitive solutes into the gas phase.

Nucleobase Participation in Ribozyme Catalysis

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2005
We constructed a modified form of the VS ribozyme containing an imidazole ring in place of adenine at position 756. The novel ribozyme is active in both cleavage and ligation reactions. The reaction is efficient, although relatively slow. The results are consistent with a role for nucleobase catalysis in the catalytic mechanism of this ribozyme.

Structure and Function of Noncanonical Nucleobases

Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2012
AbstractDNA and RNA contain, next to the four canonical nucleobases, a number of modified nucleosides that extend their chemical information content. RNA is particularly rich in modifications, which is obviously an adaptation to their highly complex and variable functions.

Nucleobase catalysis in ribozyme mechanism

Current Opinion in Chemical Biology, 2006
RNA performs a wide range of functions in biology including catalysis of chemical reactions. A major goal in the field of ribozyme chemical biology is to understand these functions in molecular terms. There is increasing evidence that ribozymes can use their nucleobases directly in chemical catalysis in a variety of ways. These include hydrogen bonding

Oxidation of DNA: Damage to Nucleobases

Accounts of Chemical Research, 2009
All organisms store the information necessary to maintain life in their DNA. Any process that damages DNA, causing a loss or corruption of that information, jeopardizes the viability of the organism. One-electron oxidation is such a process. In this Account, we address three of the central features of one-electron oxidation of DNA: (i) the migration of

Synthesis of Nucleosides with Additional Nucleobases

Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids, 2007
The syntheses of two nucleosides with additional nucleobases in the 2'-position are presented. The nucleosides have two- and one-carbon linkers to the additional nucleobase, respectively. The two nucleosides are synthesized from different strategies. The nucleoside with two carbons in the linker has been incorporated into oligonucleotides and showed ...
