Spatial memory, plasticity and nucleus accumbens
Reviews in the Neurosciences, 2012Research on the function of the nucleus accumbens, the most ventral component of the striatal complex, has traditionally focused on locomotor activity, reward, motivation and addiction. However, based on the existence of projections to the nucleus accumbens from the allocortical regions involved in spatial navigation, it has been suggested that this ...

Dopamine action in the nucleus accumbens
Journal of Neurophysiology, 1985The action of dopamine was studied in the nucleus accumbens of acutely prepared rabbits. Dopamine was applied iontophoretically to those cells and cell populations that responded in a monosynaptic excitatory manner to ipsilateral fimbrial stimulation. This strategy was adopted to isolate the effects of dopamine on postsynaptic receptors thus avoiding ...

Nucleus accumbens stimulation in pathological obesity
Neurologia i Neurochirurgia Polska, 2016One of the potential treatment methods of obesity is deep brain stimulation (DBS) of nucleus accumbens. We describe the case of 19 years old woman with hypothalamic obesity. She weighted 151.4 kg before DBS and the non-surgical methods proved to be inefficient. She was treated with implantation of DBS electrode to nucleus accumbens bilaterally. Results

Music and the nucleus accumbens
Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2014Music is a universal feature of human societies over time, mainly because it allows expression and regulation of strong emotions, thus influencing moods and evoking pleasure. The nucleus accumbens (NA), the most important pleasure center of the human brain (dominates the reward system), is the 'king of neurosciences' and dopamine (DA) can be rightfully

Medullary inputs to nucleus accumbens neurons
American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1997Extracellular single-unit recording experiments were done in α-chloralose-anesthetized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated rats to investigate the effect of stimulation of the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) in the region of the A1 noradrenergic cell group on the activity of neurons in the nucleus accumbens (

Cholecystokinergic Innervation of Nucleus Accumbens Subregions
Peptides, 1998Behavioral and pharmacological evidence has shown a different and opposite role of the neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) on the dopamine (DA) function in the caudal versus rostral part of the nucleus accumbens. Previous reports have speculated that the caudal region of the nucleus accumbens would receive CCKergic innervation from dopaminergic neurons ...

Histamine: Correlative studies in nucleus accumbens
Journal of Neurobiology, 1982AbstractThe role of histamine as a neurotransmitter has been the subject of considerable controvery. Recent evidence suggests it to be involved in such complex activities as arousal and affect. The purpose of the present study is to examine the possible source, function, and pharmacology of histamine in the nucleus accumbens, an area of the brain also ...
