Three types of pulsed signal trains emitted by Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) in Beibu Gulf, South China Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Pulsed signal trains comprising clicks, buzzes, and burst-pulses play important roles in the life activities of odontocetes, but they have not been distinguished in Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins.

Improved upper-ocean thermodynamical structure modeling with combined effects of surface waves and M2 internal tides on vertical mixing: a case study for the Indian Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development, 2022
Surface waves and internal tides have a great contribution to vertical mixing processes in the upper ocean. In this study, three mixing schemes, including non-breaking surface-wave-generated turbulent mixing, mixing induced by the wave transport flux ...

Research on outlier detection in CTD conductivity data based on cubic spline fitting

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Outlier detection is the key to the quality control of marine survey data. For the detection of outliers in Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data, previous methods, such as the Wild Edit method and the Median Filter Combined with Maximum Deviation ...

Estimating sea spray volume flux with a laser gauge in a self-consistent system

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Sea spray is one of the drivers of heat, mass, and gas exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere, and its volume flux could be estimated by the record of the laser intensity. In the laboratory experiments, the relationship between sea spray and laser

A numerical model for durotaxis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2011
Cell migration is a phenomenon that is involved in several physiological processes. In the absence of external guiding factors it shares analogies with Brownian motion. The presence of biochemical or biophysical cues, on the other hand, can influence cell migration transforming it in a biased random movement.

Amplitude modulations of seasonal variability in the Karimata Strait throughflow

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Karimata Strait (KS) throughflow between the South China Sea (SCS) and Java Sea plays an essential role in heat and freshwater budget in the SCS and dual roles in strengthening/reducing the primary Indonesian throughflow (ITF) in the Makassar Strait.

Influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation on upper-ocean salinity changes in the southeast Indian ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The interannual-decadal variability in the upper-ocean salinity of the southeast Indian Ocean (SEIO) was found to be highly correlated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

On the Hughes model and numerical aspects [PDF]

open access: yes2016 IEEE 55th Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2016
We study a crowd model proposed by R. Hughes and we describe a numerical approach to solve it. The Hughes model comprises a Fokker-Planck equation coupled with an eikonal equation with Dirichlet or Neumann data. First, we establish a priori estimates for the solutions. Second, we study radial solutions and identify a shock formation mechanism.

Rain‐rate estimation algorithm using signal attenuation of Ka‐band cloud radar

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, 2020
A millimetre‐wave cloud radar has limitations for observing heavy rainfall because the short wavelength leads to strong attenuation from raindrops. However, recent studies have attempted to estimate the rain rate using attenuation, which becomes greater ...

The onset process of the 2018/2019 Indonesian–Australian summer monsoon: The importance of the air–sea interaction

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and its associated air–sea interactions during the onset process of the 2018/2019 Indonesian–Australian summer monsoon (IASM) are investigated based on the in situ data from a moored buoy off the coast of northwest ...
