A proper balance of nutrients is essential for a healthy status and proper function of the skin. In this chapter, important nutrients for the skin are discussed along with the potential clinical consequences of deficiency. In addition, metabolic diseases leading to skin disorders are addressed.

Mitochondria in response to nutrients and nutrient-sensitive pathways
Mitochondrion, 2010Mitochondria are abundant cellular organelles, and are required for the generation of energy through oxidative catabolism. Equally important, mitochondria also provide substrates for de novo synthesis of fatty acids and multiple amino acids. Mitochondrial functions must therefore be tightly linked to cellular nutrient availability.

Nutrient efficiency along nutrient availability gradients
Oecologia, 1999The validity of nutrient use efficiency as a central concept in ecosystem ecology has recently been subject to challenge based upon arguments over autocorrelation of data, interpretation of graphical approaches, and appropriate statistical analyses. Much of the confusion on the measurement and interpretation of nutrient use efficiency results from the ...

Nutrition Reviews, 2012
Nutrient intake recommendations, unlike hormone replacement standards, are based empirically, rather than physiologically, i.e., they lack an a priori normal referent. Randomized controlled trials do not provide the needed referent and are unlikely to distinguish between fully normal and various suboptimal nutritional states.

Recognition that specific nutrients can be beneficial when consumed in amounts above the accepted daily requirements has provided a major impetus for the critical examination of dietary approaches with single or multiple nutrient supplements chosen to modulate the inflammatory response, enhance immune function, or improve the blood-gut barrier ...

Proposing nutrients and nutrient levels for rice fortification
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2014Micronutrient deficiencies are often linked to low dietary diversity. Rice fortification could substantially increase micronutrient intake in countries where rice is a staple food. The World Health Organization (WHO) interim consensus statement on maize and wheat flour fortification is based on the premise of the public health importance of specific ...

Some key advances occurred last year in understanding mechanisms involved in nutrient absorption. A novel "prechylomicron transport vesicle" was identified; its movement to the Golgi is the rate-limiting step for triacylglycerol absorption. A scavenger receptor (type BI) in the brush border membrane appears to facilitate cholesterol uptake.

Nutrient Cycling and Nutrient Use Efficiency
The American Naturalist, 1982Forest ecosystems systematically produce more litterfall dry mass per unit of nitrogen in sites with less aboveground nitrogen circulation. This pattern is observed both within and among tropical, temperate deciduous, coniferous, Mediterranean, and fertilized ecosystems.
