Defining Nutrient Density: Development and Validation of the Nutrient Rich Foods Index

Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 2009
The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid made a clear distinction between foods that were energy dense and those that were nutrient rich. Consumers were advised to seek out nutrient-rich foods (NRF) in preference to discretionary calories. However, the concept of nutrient density was not formally defined.

A fertilization model based on the concepts of nutrient flux density and nutrient productivity

Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, 1988
Fertilization is modelled on the basis of two concepts, nutrient flux density in the soil (amount of nutrient available per unit of soil and unit of time) and nutrient productivity (growth rate per unit of nutrient in plant). The nutrient productivity is used to calculate the nutrient uptake rate which is required to maintain the internal nutrient ...

A Comparison of Nutrient Density Scores for 100% Fruit Juices

Journal of Food Science, 2007
ABSTRACT:  The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that consumers choose a variety of nutrient‐dense foods. Nutrient density is usually defined as the quantity of nutrients per calorie. Food and nutrition professionals should be aware of the concept of nutrient density, how it might be quantified ...

Perspective: Why Whole Grains Should Be Incorporated into Nutrient-Profile Models to Better Capture Nutrient Density

open access: yesAdvances in Nutrition, 2021
Healthy eating patterns, as described by dietary guidelines, typically favor whole grains, low-fat dairy, vegetables, fruit, legumes, and nuts and seeds. Nutrient-profiling (NP) models capture nutrient density of individual foods and can inform healthier

Nutrient density model revisited

Nutrition Research, 1994
Abstract One of the common obstacles in the analysis of nutrient data is the high correlation between nutrients (N) and total caloric intake (T) when used in a traditional multivariate model. This results in difficulties in separating the effect of N from the effect of T when they are simultaneously used in a statistical model.

A Nutrient Density Standard for Vegetables and Fruits: Nutrients per Calorie and Nutrients per Unit Cost

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 2005
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommended that consumers give priority to nutrient-dense foods, those that contain substantial amounts of key nutrients in relation to the dietary energy they provide. This study developed a scoring system to estimate the nutritional adequacy of vegetables and fruits, on a per weight, per calorie, and per ...

Relationship between nutrient concentration, phytoplankton density, and zooplankton density in nutrient enriched experimental ponds

Hydrobiologia, 1974
The effects of different levels of nutrient input on the plankton community was investigated in a two-year controlled fertilization study of eight experimental ponds. There were four treatments, each replicated: a control, to which no fertilizer was added, and three levels of nutrient addition.
