Timing of cotyledon post-emergence damage drives physiological compensation and resource allocation in oak seedling establishment

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background Cotyledons serve dual roles as nutrient reserves and physical protectors during early seedling establishment. However, they are vulnerable to diverse granivorous and environmental stressors.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

The Olifantsfontein Nutrient Removal Plant

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1990
The paper describes the upgrading of an existing trickling filter (TF) plant by adding a new activated sludge (AS) plant in order to remove nutrients from the combined effluent of both plants. In spite of the low COD/TKN ratio, good nitrogen and phosphate removals were obtained in the three-stage Bardenpho (AS) plant.

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Algae-supplemented anaerobic biofilters enable nutrient recovery from agricultural runoff and atmospheric carbon capture

open access: yesChemical Engineering Journal. Green and Sustainable
Nutrient pollution by agricultural runoff causes eutrophication in surface water bodies. However, nutrients can be recovered and used as biofertilizer.

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Leaf Removal Enhances Tuber Yield in Jerusalem Artichoke by Modulating Rhizosphere Nutrient Availability

open access: yesAgronomy
Leaves, as the primary “source” organ for photosynthesis, directly influence plant yield. However, it remains unclear whether leaf removal affects Jerusalem artichoke yield by altering rhizosphere nutrient availability.
