praCtiCal aspECts of nutritional thErapy and Blood gluCosE lEvEl in CritiCally ill patiEnts [PDF]

open access: yesNew Medicine, 2017
the main goal of nutritional support in critically ill patients is to minimize the negative protein balance by avoiding starvation, with the purpose of maintaining muscular, immune, and cognitive function, as well as to enhance recovery. nutrition can be

Caenorhabditis elegans as a Model for the Effects of Phytochemicals on Mitochondria and Aging

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2022
The study of aging is an important topic in contemporary research. Considering the demographic changes and the resulting shifts towards an older population, it is of great interest to preserve youthful physiology in old age.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Nutritional education for doctors and nurses: What is the impact? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The under-recognition and under-treatment of malnutrition in the UK, which costs the NHS an estimated £13 billion each year, has been linked to poor provision of nutritional education in medical and nursing academic programmes. The present study aimed to

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

One Page in the History of Starvation and Refeeding

open access: yesRambam Maimonides Medical Journal
There is a long history of starvation, including reports dated back to antiquity. Despite exceptional scientific developments, starvation still exists today.

Nutritional Risk of Candidates for Simultaneous Pancreatic–Kidney Transplantation—A Narrative Review

open access: yes, 2023
Introduction: Not much is known about the significance of nutritional status and support in transplant surgery, least of all in simultaneous pancreatic and kidney transplantation.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Dietary Modulation of the Gut Microbiota in Dogs and Cats and Its Role in Disease Management

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Food has a massive influence on the gut microbiota and is one of the most useful therapeutic levers in disease. Recent developments have highlighted how macronutrient balance, food format, and functional ingredients can regulate microbial diversity ...
