Trace element residues in water, sediments, and organs of Savacu (Nycticorax nycticorax) from Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

open access: yesRevista Ambiente & Água, 2010
Heavy metal (Cr, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb) concentrations in water, sediment and organs of Savacu, Nycticorax nycticorax were analyzed. Samples of water and sediment were collected from seven stations along Sepetiba Bay, and experimental animals, also were ...

Steep declines of colonial wading birds in northeastern North America's largest breeding population

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice
Urban estuaries can support thriving ecosystems despite bustling human activity, and bird populations can serve as a key indicator of environmental health.

Efficacy of Painting Wind Turbine Blades as a Mitigation Measure to Reduce Bird Collisions in a Mediterranean Wind Farm. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Bird mortality due to collisions with wind turbines necessitates the implementation of measures to mitigate this impact. Blade patterning has shown to be a promising measure to increase turbine visibility to birds and reduce collisions. Employing a Before–After–Control–Impact experiment using long‐term fatality searches, bird fatality rates were ...

Urban Parks Act as Refuges for Avian Biodiversity in Chaoyang District, Beijing (China). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We assessed bird species richness, seasonal dynamics, and habitat associations across four urban parks in Beijing's Chaoyang District (China) using standardised point count surveys. A total of 68 bird species were recorded, with the highest diversity occurring in parks with extensive wetlands and marked seasonal variation during migration periods.

A Genomic Catalog of Migratory Microbiomes from Wild Birds across China's Habitats. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
ABSTRACT Migratory birds play an important role in the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR); however, gaps in surveillance data from vital regions along migratory flyways across China limit the detection of emergent threats. Here, we assembled 340 metagenomes from 52 bird species covering 11 provincial administrative districts in China, presenting ...

Genome Assemblies for Seven Families of Birds From the Global South. [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol Resour
ABSTRACT Tropical regions are biodiversity‐rich, yet remain underrepresented in the availability of genomic resources, as is evident in the Western Ghats of India, a biodiversity hotspot with high endemism. Here, we present high‐quality, de novo genome assemblies for seven birds, representing seven families distributed in the Western Ghats: Black‐naped

Breaking Boundaries: First Observation of Intertidal Emergence During Mating in Octopuses. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We document the first recorded case of intertidal emergence during copulation in Callistoctopus macropus. A mating pair gradually moved from shallow water onto the rocky shore while remaining attached, with the female resisting and the male counter‐anchoring for nearly 20 min before re‐submerging.

Long-term monitoring and remote sensing reveal waterbird colony collapses with rising lake levels and multiple stressors. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Appl
Abstract Global climate change is expected to exacerbate existing environmental stressors and increasingly impact biodiversity. While likely widespread, changes in wildlife populations resulting from the interaction of climate change and other environmental stressors remain poorly understood.

Mangrove Habitats in Zhanjiang of South China: A Potentially High-Risk Environment for Breeding Birds. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Mangroves are important feeding and wintering grounds for many birds. However, we still know little about the risk of nest predation experienced by birds breeding in mangrove habitats. The nest predation rates were 100% for the experimental nests in mangroves within 7 days, with diverse predators. Birds breeding in Zhangjiang mangrove habitats of south

A Breath of Fresh Air: A Novel Passive Airborne eDNA Approach for Scalable Terrestrial Biodiversity Monitoring. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The study introduces the Nutshell eDNA sampler, an inexpensive, reusable passive device for collecting environmental DNA from air to monitor terrestrial biodiversity. Tested at the Rotterdam Zoo, it detected numerous species and complimented active samplers in identifying zoo animals, continuing to accumulate DNA over longer sampling times and ...
