Immediate postoperative urine dipstick occult blood positivity: a simple and early indicator of high-risk acute kidney injury after on-pump cardiac surgery

open access: yesBMC Nephrology
Background We evaluated whether immediate postoperative urine dipstick occult blood after on-pump cardiac surgery could serve as an early indicator of high-risk cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI).

Gastric Ulcers in Alpacas— Clinical, Laboratory, and Pathological Findings

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2022
Gastric ulcers are a common finding in post-mortem examinations of South American camelids (SAC), but diagnosis in living animals is often difficult. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the incidence of gastric ulcers in alpacas, common ...

Microfluidic Nano‐Assembly of Red‐Blood‐Cell (RBC) Lipids and Components for Engineering Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered red blood cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (eRBCEVs) are synthesized via controlled microfluidic assembly from native RBC lipids, enabling tunable encapsulation of proteins, nucleic acids, nanoparticles, and viral vectors. The platform demonstrates reproducible nanoscale architecture, preserved membrane composition, and functional cargo ...

Multidimensional Cellular Micro‐Compartments to Model Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Dormancy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is an understudied subtype of breast cancer that is susceptible to late recurrences. In this study, micro‐compartmentalization techniques spanning multiple dimensions, including 2D, pseudo‐3D, and 3D, are integrated to uncover the mechanisms underlying ILC dormancy, revealing the central role of p27Kip1.

Randomized controlled trial:Flexible sigmoidoscopy as an adjunct to faecal occult blood testing in population screening [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Objectives: Flexible sigmoidoscopy screening at around age 60 can reduce colorectal cancer incidence. Insufficient evidence exists on flexible sigmoidoscopy at age 60 in a population being offered biennial faecal occult blood test screening from age 50 ...

A rare cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding: Chronic enteropathy associated with SLCO2A1 mutation in a case from India

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gastrointestinal Intervention
A 13-year-old boy presented with an 8-year history of repeated episodes of anemia. Laboratory investigations confirmed iron deficiency anemia due to occult blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract.

Comparison of Multiplex Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Assays for Detection of Respiratory Viruses in Nasopharyngeal Specimens

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Microbiology, 2019
Background: Respiratory tract infections are major public health threats, and the identification of their causative microbes helps clinicians to initiate timely and appropriate antimicrobial therapy and prevent the secondary spread of infection. The main

Faecal haemoglobin concentrations are associated with all-cause mortality and cause of death in colorectal cancer screening

open access: yesBMC Medicine, 2023
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening reduces all-cause and CRC-related mortality. New research demonstrates that the faecal haemoglobin concentration (f-Hb) may indicate the presence of other serious diseases not related to CRC.

Affinity‐Tuned Albumin Hitchhiking Extends the Bioorthogonal Capture Window in Pretargeting Radiotheranostics

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Pharmacokinetic engineering of clickable radioligands was achieved via albumin hitchhiking approach within a pretargeted radiotheranostics delivery platform. This approach reduced rapid renal elimination, expanded bioorthogonal capture window, boosted tumor uptake by ∼3.5‐fold, and improved the tumor‐to‐liver ratio by ∼6‐fold.
