Building like a Coral—Parallelized, Multiscale Biofabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Corals build stiff, strong, and inherently circular skeletal materials under resource‐ and energy‐limited conditions—offering blueprints for transformative materials. We synthesize the current understanding of coral biomineralization and reframe coral growth as a multiscale, parallelized biofabrication process.

Physical Sources of High‐Frequency Seismic Noise on Cascadia Initiative Ocean Bottom Seismometers

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2020
Physical sources of high‐frequency seismic noise in the ocean are investigated using data from the Cascadia Initiative (CI) ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) network, hindcasts of wind speed, waves, and the bottom currents predicted by a regional ocean ...

Transducers Across Scales and Frequencies: A System‐Level Framework for Multiphysics Integration and Co‐Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Transducers convert physical signals into electrical and optical representations, yet each mechanism is bounded by intrinsic trade‐offs across bandwidth, sensitivity, speed, and energy. This review maps transduction mechanisms across physical scale and frequency, showing how heterogeneous integration and multiphysics co‐design transform isolated ...

Morphodynamics of submarine channel inception revealed by new experimental approach

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Suspended sediment currents travel through channels on the ocean floor to deliver enormous volumes of sediment to the deep ocean. Here, using a new approach for scaled laboratory experiments, the authors show how feedback between these currents and their

Reverse Intersystem Crossing and Exciton Harvesting: A Pathway to Low Threshold in Multi‐Resonant TADF Electrically Pumped Organic Semiconductor Lasers

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Electrically pumped organic lasing thresholds are lowered by mitigating triplet accumulation through a tailored host‐guest system. Integrating the multi‐resonant TADF emitter DABNA‐2 into a triplet‐scavenging BSBCz host suppresses singlet‐triplet annihilation.

A Method for Along-Track Interferometric Phase Elimination of Large Baseline Imaging Radar Altimeter

open access: yesIEEE Access
The large baseline imaging radar altimeter (LB-IRA), deployed in a dual-satellite formation, enhances altimetric accuracy to sub-centimeter levels through the use of helical orbits to extend the interferometric baseline.

Responsive Visible‐Wavelength Metasurfaces from Porous Silicon Based on Fano Guided‐Mode Resonance

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
The article introduces mesoporous silicon metasurfaces (pSi‐MS) supporting Fano guided‐mode resonances in the visible regime. By combining top‐down lithographic patterning of 2D gratings with bottom‐up electrochemical porosification, the approach realizes a new class of responsive metasurfaces, enabling highly sensitive and portable platforms for small

The Winds and Currents Mission Concept

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The Winds and Currents Mission (WaCM) is a proposed approach to meet the need identified by the NRC Decadal Survey for the simultaneous measurements of ocean vector winds and currents. WaCM features a Ka-band pencil-beam Doppler scatterometer able to map
