Poleward heat transport by the ocean

Reviews of Geophysics, 1983
Poleward heat transport and its relation to the thermohaline circulation of the World Ocean have long been neglected subjects, but a perceived need for a better understanding of the Earth's climate have given an impetus to studies of the ocean's role in the global heat balance.

Ocean heat transport in Simple Ocean Data Assimilation: Structure and mechanisms

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2009
The trend and variability of global ocean heat transport for the period 1958–2004 are investigated using the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) analysis. The ocean model is forced with the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) ERA‐40 atmospheric reanalysis winds from 1958 to 2001 and with QuikSCAT winds from 2002 to 2004.

Warm pool ocean heat content regulates ocean–continent moisture transport

Nature, 2022
The Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) exerts a dominant role in global climate by releasing huge amounts of water vapour and latent heat to the atmosphere and modulating upper ocean heat content (OHC), which has been implicated in modern climate change1. The long-term variations of IPWP OHC and their effect on monsoonal hydroclimate are, however, not fully

The annual cycle of oceanic heat storage and oceanic meridional heat transport

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1989
AbstractThe global climatology of monthly heat storage and heat transport are presented using data from the Master Oceanographic Observations Data Set for the period 1949–1980. Heat storage and the rate of heat storage change are calculated for the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Ocean Heat Transport

2013
Abstract The ability to ascertain the implications of a changing climate are based first and foremost on our understanding the fundamental balances comprising earth’s climate. The global energy budget is integral to this understanding, and the poleward transport of heat by the oceans is an intrinsic component of the energy balance.
