The Energetics of Ocean Heat Transport
Journal of Climate, 2005Abstract A number of recent papers have argued that the mechanical energy budget of the ocean places constraints on how the thermohaline circulation is driven. These papers have been used to argue that climate models, which do not specifically account for the energy of mixing, potentially miss a very important feedback on climate change.

Chapter 6.1 Ocean heat transport
2001Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the progress in the methods for determining ocean heat transport and reassesses the direct estimation of ocean heat transports from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) observations. The role of the oceans in maintaining the global heat balance is evaluated largely by three methods—namely, (1) the ...

Implied ocean heat transport in CMIP6 models
2021<p>The importance of heat transport in the ocean to maintain energy balance between different regions is well known, with heat typically being transported from the Equator to high latitudes. Ocean heat transport (OHT) can be separated into two different components; a divergent component which contributes directly to the Earths& ...

Increased ocean heat transports and warmer climate
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1991We investigated the effect of increased ocean heat transports on climate in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) general circulation model (GCM). The increases used were sufficient to melt all sea ice at high latitudes, and amounted to 15% on the global average. The resulting global climate is 2°C warmer, with temperature increases of some 20°

Heat transport by ocean currents
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1967Several authors have calculated the heat transport by ocean currents from maps of heat budget components. Their results suggest the importance of the energy transported by ocean currents, which at some latitudes exceeds one-third that transported by the atmosphere.

Interannual Variability of Indian Ocean Heat Transport
Journal of Climate, 2006Abstract The work in this paper builds upon the relatively well-studied seasonal cycle of the Indian Ocean heat transport by investigating its interannual variability over a 41-yr period (1958–98). An intermediate, two-and-a-half-layer thermodynamically active ocean model with mixed layer physics is used in the investigation. The results

Ekman heat transport for slab oceans
Climate Dynamics, 2011A series of schemes designed to include various representations of the Ekman-driven heat fluxes in slab-ocean models is introduced. They work by computing an Ekman mass flux, then deducing heat fluxes by the surface flow and an opposite deep return flow. The schemes differ by the computation of the return flow temperature: either diagnosed from the SST

Estimates of Global Oceanic Meridional Heat Transport
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1985Abstract Estimates of oceanic meridional energy transport for the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans are made using calculated annual mean surface energy fluxes. The surface flux calculations use bulk formulations based on 31-year (1949–79) surface marine observations from the Consolidated Data Set of the U.S. Navy Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center.

Direct estimates and mechanisms of ocean heat transport
Deep Sea Research Part A. Oceanographic Research Papers, 1982Abstract From oceanographic measurements of currents and temperature used in a direct calculation, ocean heat transport at 25°N in the Atlantic Ocean was estimated to be 1.1 × 1015W. The method used is discussed and the estimate revised to 1.2 × 1015W by using more complete data.

Meridional Heat Transport in the Pacific Ocean
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1984Abstract The heat transported meridionally in the Pacific Ocean is calculated from the surface heat budgets of Clark and Weare and others; both budgets were based on Bunker's method with different radiation formulas. The meridional heat transport is also calculated from the surface heat budget of Esbensen and Kushnir, who used Budyko's method. The heat
