Temporal Variation in the Microbiome of Tropical and Temperate Octocorals

Microbial Ecology, 2021
Bacterial members of the coral holobiont play an important role in determining coral fitness. However, most knowledge of the coral microbiome has come from reef-building scleractinian corals, with far less known about the nature and importance of the microbiome of octocorals (subclass Octocorallia), which contribute significantly to reef biodiversity ...

Cembranoids from the Octocoral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi

Journal of Natural Products, 2010
Chemical investigation of the octocoral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi led to the isolation of six new cembranoids, (+)-12-carboxy-11Z-sarcophytoxide (1), (+)-12-methoxycarbonyl-11Z-sarcophine (3), ehrenberoxides A-C (4-6), and lobophynin C (2), along with two known compounds, (+)-sarcophytoxide (7) and (+)-sarcophine (8).

Reactive Oxygen Species and the Stress Response in Octocorals

Physiological and Biochemical Zoology, 2021
AbstractReactive oxygen species (ROS) may damage cellular components but may also contribute to signaling that mitigates damage. In this context, the role of ROS in the stress response that leads to coral bleaching was investigated in three series of experiments with octocorals Sarcothelia sp. and Sympodium sp.

Octocorals as indicators of anthropogenic nutrients

2023
Coastal ecosystems are influenced by anthropogenic nutrients. Increased nutrient loading has not been directly linked to the source of the nutrients because of the inadequacies of current nutrient sampling methods. I propose to use N stable isotope analysis of octocorals as proxies of environmental N availability.

Circulation of Fluids in the Gastrovascular System of a Stoloniferan Octocoral [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Biological Bulletin, 2010
Cilia-based transport systems characterize sponges and placozoans. Cilia are employed in cnidarian gastrovascular systems as well, but typically function in concert with muscular contractions. Previous reports suggest that anthozoans may be an exception to this pattern, utilizing only cilia in their gastrovascular systems.

Structural investigations of octocoral sclerites

Zoologica Scripta, 1987
A common structural pattern (as observed under the SEM) in the main body of sectioned sclerites of the family Alcyoniidae, and octocorals in general, is the arrangement of acicular crystals in concentric layers. The crystals roughly follow the direction of the spicule axis, however, the sectioned tubercles of large Sinularia spicules have the acicular ...

Bacterial Communities of the Gorgonian Octocoral Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae

Microbial Ecology, 2013
Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae is a common inhabitant of Caribbean reefs and is a well-known source of diterpenes with diverse biological activities. Notably, this octocoral is the sole source of the pseudopterosin family of anti-inflammatory diterpenes and is harvested to supply commercial demand for these metabolites.

Caribbean gorgonian octocorals cope with nutrient enrichment

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2019
Corals inhabit oligotrophic waters, thriving amidst limited nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous. When nutrient levels increase, usually due to human activity, the symbiosis of dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae) with scleractinian corals can break down.

Four New Steroids from Two Octocorals

Journal of Natural Products, 1999
In search of analogues of isogosterones A-D (1-4), a group of antifouling 13,17-seco-steroids found in octocorals of the order Alcyonacea, we have isolated four new steroids possessing aromatic, enone, or dienone A-rings from two octocorals, Alcyonium gracillimum and Dendronephthya sp. These compounds, 3-methoxy-19-norpregna-1,3, 5(10),20-tetraene (5),
