The Odyssey's mythological network. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
In this work, we study the mythological network of Odyssey of Homer. We use ordinary statistical quantifiers in order to classify the network as real or fictional. We also introduce an analysis of communities which allows us to see how network properties

An Iliadic Odyssey as a song of the Sirens

open access: yes, 2021
This short essay about the Odyssey of “Homer” is a playful experiment. But it is based on an even shorter essay that is quite serious in intent. That essay (Nagy 2020) appears in World Epics, an on-line site edited by Jo Ann Cavallo, whose own work on ...

Interaction of HS1BP3 with cortactin modulates TKS5 localisation, cell secretion and cancer malignancy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that HS1BP3 interacts with Cortactin through a proline‐rich region (PRR3.1) and show that this interaction, and HS1BP3 itself, promote cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Inhibition of this interaction leads to build‐up of TKS5 in multivesicular endosomes and altered secretion of CD63 and CD9, providing an explanation for the ...

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

The zinc bound form of the actinomycete derived natural product compound JBIR-141 induces a mitotic phenotype in fission yeast

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study was designed to identify the natural product compound produced by the actinomycete strain “S149” which is capable of inducing a strong small cell phenotype, called wee, in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

Odyssey of the mind: Social networking in a cyberschool

open access: yesInternational Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, 2012
K-12 online learning and cyber charter schools have grown at a tremendous rate over the past decade. At the same time, these online programs have struggled to provide the social spaces where students can interact that K-12 schools are traditionally able ...

Odyssey: a public GPU-based code for GRRT

open access: yes, 2016
<p>Odyssey is a public, GPU-based General Relativistic Radiative Transfer (GRRT) code for computing images and/or spectra in Kerr metric, which described the spacetime aroung a rotating black hole. Implemented in CUDA C/C++, Odyssey is based on the

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

‘D’oh Brother Where Art Thou’: Homer’s Women in The Simpsons and Contemporary Screen Adaptations

open access: yesHumanities, 2023
In the Odyssey, Homer’s Penelope and Circe have fundamentally important roles in ensuring the progression and success of the hero’s, Odysseus, journey home. Their actions in the Odyssey invite complex readings of the two women.
