Interpreting Experimental Bearing Oil Film Thickness Data
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1989<div class="htmlview paragraph">To verify the relationship between bearing oil film thickness and high-temperature, high-shear (HTHS) engine oil viscosity, accurate values for bearing oil temperature and shear rate are needed. Techniques for making these determinations are presented using data collected from engine tests with both single- and ...

Oil Film Thickness in Lightly-Loaded Roller Bearings
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 1974The effects of speed, load and roller geometry on the oil film thickness and shape in a complete roller bearing are demonstrated experimentally by means of optical interferometry. At quite moderate roller speeds, increase of film thickness becomes inhibited.

Quantitative elastohydrodynamic film thickness of mechanically degraded oil
Tribology International, 2013Abstract The low-shear viscosities of new oil and used (degraded) oil were measured to moderately high pressure. Shear-thinning flow curves were generated over a range of shear stress important to EHL film forming. Mechanical shear degradation only affected the viscosity at low shear stress while the viscosity at high stress remained unchanged.

Oil film thickness using airborne laser-induced oil fluorescence backscatter
Applied Optics, 1983Remote airborne measurement of oil film thickness on ocean surface using laser-induced water Raman backscatter is discussed. It is pointed out that the theoretical model of oil fluorescence by Horvath et al. (1971) contains the necessary constituents to provide for the natural background fluorescence that is also induced by the laser during the course ...

Optical Measurement of Oil Film Thickness Between Rollers
Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1977Previous research has established that the laser beam diffraction method can be used for measurement of film thicknesses between two adjacent flat surfaces. This paper describes further experimentation on this method, where oil film thicknesses between rollers is measured.

Nanometric Thickness EHL Oil Films
Part B: Magnetic Storage Tribology; Manufacturing/Metalworking Tribology; Nanotribology; Engineered Surfaces; Biotribology; Emerging Technologies; Special Symposia on Contact Mechanics; Special Symposium on Nanotribology, 2006EHD oil films possess a remnant thickness of 10–20 nm at very low speeds. This behavior was justified numerically using an empirical equation for wall viscosity. This paper uses molecule-wall interaction potential and finds that the viscosity decreases exponentially with the distance to the wall. A thin attached layer, responsible for remnant oil film,

Oil Refinery Applications Of Thick-Film Synthetic Coatings
Corrosion, 1959Three recent developments in synthetic protective coatings have made possible relatively thick film applications per coat without resulting in sags, runs or skin-dry wrinkling. These developments are hot spray application, catalyst-cured coatings and high-film-build alkyd paints.
