Apoptosis in the development of the mouse olfactory epithelium

Developmental Brain Research, 1999
Apoptotic cells were detected in the mouse olfactory epithelium (OE) at different embryonic and postnatal stages by in situ nick translation (ISNT) and Tdt-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) techniques. During development, the apoptotic process presented two peaks.

Neurogenesis in the Adult Olfactory Epithelium

, 2015
Neurogenesis has long been recognized as a property of the adult olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium is a pseudo-stratified, columnar epithelium containing three cell compartments: the superficial supporting cells, the medially located sensory

Effects of Statins on Regeneration of Olfactory Epithelium

American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy, 2010
Background This study was performed to investigate whether statins can enhance the recovery of the olfactory epithelium (OE) damaged by 3-methylindole (3MI), an olfactotoxicant, and to compare the effects with those of steroids. Methods Randomized placebo-controlled trial was performed. Fifty-four healthy female Sprague–Dawley rats (aged 9–10 weeks and

Olfactory Epithelium: Unitary Responses in the Tortoise

Science, 1963
In the tortoise, Gopherus polyphemus , single unit spikes in the olfactory epithelium in response to amyl acetate were positive relative to the slow potential. The number of spikes in a response train was 4 to 15, the duration 3 to 4 msec, the height 0.5 to 2 mv. The height of successive spikes in a train decreased.

The Ultrastructure of the Olfactory Epithelium of the Guinea Pig

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1967
The olfactory mucosa of the guinea pig was studied by electron microscopy. Threa cell types, namely supporting cells, basal cells, and receptor cells were observed. The characteristic feature of the supporting cells was the abundance of various single-membrane-limited inclusion bodies.

Molecular Mechanisms of Olfactory Processing in the Mammalian Olfactory Epithelium

ORL, 1996
In humans the sense of smell plays an important role in protecting the organism from external hazards like fire, gas or spoiled food, in the consumption of food and in chemical communication with one another. Increasingly, the study of human olfaction is relevant to a number of medical problems connected with olfactory dysfunction, i.e ...

Projection of the Olfactory Epithelium on to the Olfactory Bulb: a Correction

Nature, 1950
IN a study of the peripheral pattern of olfactory innervation1, observations were made on the rate of retrograde degeneration of olfactory receptors following lesions of the olfactory bulb. It was incidentally noted that, at least over the cartilaginous part of the septum examined, partial ablation of the bulb appeared to lead to a general thinning out

Differentiation of the Olfactory Epithelium during Deyelopment

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1995
Maturation of the olfactory epithelium was studied in the rat. As a developmental index of the olfactory epithelium, quantitation was based on the thickness and the number of cell layers of the epithelium. Mean epithelial thicknesses were 84 microns on embryonic day (E) 19, 94 microns on postnatal day (P) 0, 98 microns on P10 and 57 microns in adult ...

The Dynamics of Cell Death in the Olfactory Epithelium

Experimental Neurology, 1993
Adult vertebrate olfactory epithelia are unique in their continual sensory neuron turnover and replacement. This paper describes studies of various aspects of the death of these receptor neurons in unoperated rats and at 12 days and 7 weeks after unilateral ablation of the olfactory bulb, the receptor neuron synaptic target.
