Esterase activity in the olfactory sensilla of the silkmoth Antheraea polyphemus

We studied in individual males of Antheraea polyphemus the activity of the sensillar esterase, a pheromone-degrading enzyme present in the sensillum lymph surrounding the olfactory receptor cells. In parallel, receptor potentials from single pheromone-sensitive sensilla trichodea were recorded.

Honeybee placode sensilla contain 18-35 olfactory receptor neurons. In insects, such neurons are thought to not interact with one another before reaching the central nervous system. Extracellular, multiunit recordings were made from the placodes and separated into spike shape classes, termed subplacode units.

Cell degeneration during early development of hymenopteran olfactory sensilla

The imaginal pore plates of Hymenoptera apocrita so far examined embody five or six envelope cells respectively. In early developmental stages, however, supernumerary envelope cells have been found. The results are discussed in the context of cell death as a developmental phenomenon.
