Hydrothermal carbonization of olive mill wastewater
Bioresource Technology, 2013Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an emerging technology to treat wet biomasses aimed at producing a biochar material. Herein, olive mill wastewater (OMW) was subjected to HTC. Mass balance considerations provide evidence that the yield of biochar is low (~30%, w/w), which is associated with a low fraction of carbohydrates in OMW.

Waste Management & Research: The Journal for a Sustainable Circular Economy, 1995Olive-mill wastewaters (O.M.W.) containing about 7% solids were composted with wheat straw in a forced aeration static pile. Two percent urea was added to ensure a C/N ratio of about 35. To avoid overdosing with water, a fraction of the O.M.W. equal to the weight of the straw was added initially.
