Preemptive one lung ventilation enhances lung collapse during thoracoscopic surgery: A randomized controlled trial

open access: yesThoracic Cancer, 2019
In routine practice, one lung ventilation (OLV) is initiated upon pleural opening. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare lung collapse after preemptive OLV versus conventional OLV in thoracoscopic surgery.

Prediction of Long‐Term Prognosis in Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Using the National Clinical Database Risk Calculator

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This study aimed to determine the value of the National Clinical Database (NCD) risk calculator in predicting surgical outcomes and long‐term prognosis in patients undergoing resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We retrospectively analyzed data from 210 patients with HCC who underwent initial hepatic resection, assessing the relationship ...

Integrating Reinforcement Learning With Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Real‐Time Clinical Decision Support in Dynamic Healthcare Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A hybrid Reinforcement Learning–Explainable AI framework integrates SHAP and LIME explanations directly into a Deep Q‐Network inference loop for real‐time ICU decision support. Trained on 18 142 mechanically ventilated stays from the eICU database, the system attains 93.0% decision accuracy, 20% fewer errors than RL alone, and a 91% clinician trust ...

Giovanni Antonio Scopoli's De Hydrargyro Idriensi Tentamina (1761): Mercury Mining, Mercurialism, and Preventive Reasoning in Eighteenth‐Century Occupational Medicine

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Giovanni Antonio Scopoli (1723–1788), a physician‐naturalist of the Enlightenment, is primarily remembered for his contributions to botany and entomology. Less attention has been paid to his medical work De hydrargyro Idriensi Tentamina physico‐chymico‐medica (1761), written during his fifteen years of service as physician at the mercury mines

The Diagnosis That Arrived Decades Late: Living Without and Then With Myhre Syndrome

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part C: Seminars in Medical Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Myhre syndrome (MIM #139210) is a rare multisystem disorder first described in 1981, characterized by short stature, neurodevelopmental delay, joint contractures, and cardiopulmonary complications. Its molecular basis, recurrent pathogenic variants in SMAD4, was not discovered until 2011. This narrative is based on a review of medical records,

Curious case of pediatric one-lung ventilation with two endotracheal tubes: A case report

open access: yesAnnals of Cardiac Anaesthesia
One-lung ventilation is indicated during thoracic surgery for visualization and exposure of surgical site. It is achieved with bronchial blockers, double-lumen endobronchial tube, single-lumen endotracheal tubes and Univent tube for infants and children.

SDPR–STK38 axis controls the proliferation–differentiation balance in alveolar type II cells

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The present study identifies SDPR as a pivotal regulator orchestrating the balance between proliferation and differentiation in alveolar type II (AT2) cells. In SDPR+/+ cells, SDPR binds to and inhibits STK38 activity, thereby sustaining GSK‐3β signaling functionality to promote cyclin D1 degradation and maintain cell cycle homeostasis.

Genome‐wide network analysis identifies the lncRNA‐92467/miR‐205‐5p/PTPRM/CAMs axis in a rat model of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The pathogenesis of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) remains unclear. In this study, we explored its key regulatory mechanisms using animal models, RNA sequencing, and cellular assays. We found that lncRNA‐92467 functions as a ceRNA, binding miR‐205‐5p, and thereby upregulating PTPRM, inhibiting abnormal proliferation and migration of endothelial ...
