A Conserved Isoleucine Gates the Diffusion of CO and O2 to the Active Site of NiFe CO‐Dehydrogenase

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 44, 26 October 2026.
A combination of protein film electrochemistry and site‐directed mutagenesis shows that isoleucine 563 (numbering of Thermococcus sp. AM4) gates the arrival of both CO and O2 to the active site of the nickel‐iron CO dehydrogenases. Mutations at this position increase the resistance to O2 at the cost of a slower reaction with CO.

Lachnospiraceae in the Food–Gut Axis: A Critical Review of Dietary Modulation, Immune Regulation, and Translational Barriers

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT The interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and host immunity is central to food science. The Lachnospiraceae family ferments dietary fibers to produce short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), notably butyrate and propionate, with immunomodulatory potential. This critical review distinguishes established findings from hypotheses.

Beyond Bactericidal: Plasma Surface Engineering to Defeat Food Matrix‐Conditioning Layers

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT The persistence of foodborne pathogens on industrial food contact surfaces continues to challenge global food safety despite advances in sanitation technologies. A central limitation of current antimicrobial strategies lies in their validation under simplified laboratory conditions that overlook the physicochemically driven formation of food ...

Live Fast, Die Old: Lowering Insulin Signalling During Development Can Speed Growth, Increase Reproduction and Lifespan, but Impair Environmental Sensing and Harm Offspring in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 11, November 2026.
Developmental reduction of insulin/IGF‐1 signalling via daf‐2 RNAi accelerates development, increases early reproduction, fitness, and lifespan in C. elegans, but compromises environmental sensing. Reduced IIS promotes inappropriate offspring dauer entry and delays recovery from developmental arrest.

From Dysbiosis to Disease: How Vaginal Microbiota Shape Group B Streptococcus Pathogenesis

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Lactobacillus crispatus plays a critical role in the vaginal microbiome. Limiting glucose shifts metabolism toward HMO consumption and amino acid metabolism. These actions enable alkali production and competition. Homeostasis, characterized by dense Lactobacilli colonization and suppression of pathogens, provides resistance to dysbiosis.

Rational Design of a Synthetic Galliphore for the Diagnostic Nuclear Imaging and Treatment of Bacterial Infections

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 43, 19 October 2026.
KO‐NH2 is a synthetic metallophore that preferentially binds Ga3+ over Fe3+ and is recognized by bacterial transporters. Photocrosslinking identifies CirA and Fiu as key uptake proteins in E. coli. KO‐NH2 enables targeted imaging and treatment of E. coli soft tissue infections.

Cytoplasmic Lipid Membrane Biogenesis in Prokaryotes: From Soluble Lipid Building Blocks to a Dynamic and Functional Boundary Layer

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Lipid membranes are fundamental to all prokaryotic life. Besides acting as barrier, by orienting as hydrophobic bilayer, lipids are involved in a wide variety of other cellular processes. As a consequence, prokaryotic membranes are dynamic entities that switch their lipid composition as required; a process that requires tight interplay with the lipid ...

High‐Resolution Corrosion Fingerprinting of Alloy Libraries via Microdroplet Spectroelectrochemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 20, 21 October 2026.
Ionic‐liquid microdroplet spectroelectrochemistry enables stable, localized electrochemical measurements over extended timescales. By coupling impedance spectroscopy, wetting analysis, finite‐element simulations, and operando Raman spectroscopy, it disentangles geometrical and electrochemical effects, opening new opportunities for rapid corrosion ...
