Neurobiological evidence and clinical experience indicate that opioid dependence is a chronic relapsing disorder. Crisis intervention, abstinence-oriented treatment (including detoxification and relapse prevention), and agonist maintenance treatment are the current treatment options depending on the individually pursued treatment goals.
