Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Association between charcoal cooking fuel and cardiovascular disease prevalence in Haiti: a cross-sectional analysis

open access: yesEnvironmental Health
Background There is little evidence on the association between cooking with polluting fuels, particularly charcoal, and heart disease from low- and middle-income countries, which have the highest burdens of polluting fuels and cardiovascular disease (CVD)

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Exploring convolutional neural networks and spatial video for on-the-ground mapping in informal settlements

open access: yesInternational Journal of Health Geographics, 2021
Background The health burden in developing world informal settlements often coincides with a lack of spatial data that could be used to guide intervention strategies.

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

High Burden of Cardiovascular Disease and Mental Health Illness Comorbidity in Urban Haiti

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background People living in low‐income settings facing humanitarian crises are at risk for comorbid cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mental health (MH) illness, yet there are limited population‐based data available.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia in Gauteng academic hospitals, South Africa

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2015
Introduction: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are responsible for longer hospital stays, increased hospital costs, and poorer outcomes compared to methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) infections.

Prevalence and distribution of Entamoeba species in a rural community in northern South Africa

open access: yesFood and Waterborne Parasitology, 2020
Amoebiasis occurs worldwide and affects about 20–50 million people annually. Stool samples were collected from patients attending different rural clinics in Northern South Africa in the present study. Microscopic examination was performed for the initial
