Human Opsonins Induced during Meningococcal Disease Recognize Outer Membrane Proteins PorA and PorB [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1999
ABSTRACT Human opsonins directed against specific meningococcal outer membrane structures in sera obtained during meningococcal disease were quantified with a recently developed antigen-specific, opsonin-dependent phagocytosis and oxidative burst assay. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) and PorA (class 1) and PorB (class 3) proteins

Calreticulin and Galectin-3 Opsonise Bacteria for Phagocytosis by Microglia

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Opsonins are soluble, extracellular proteins, released by activated immune cells, and when bound to a target cell, can induce phagocytes to phagocytose the target cell. There are three known classes of opsonin: antibodies, complement factors and secreted

Borrelia burgdorferi Manipulates Innate and Adaptive Immunity to Establish Persistence in Rodent Reservoir Hosts. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex is capable of establishing persistent infections in a wide variety of species, particularly rodents. Infection is asymptomatic or mild in most reservoir host species, indicating successful co-evolution of ...

The level of mannan-binding protein regulates the binding of complement-derived opsonins to mannan and zymosan at low serum concentrations [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Immunology, 1990
SUMMARY When sera diluted to 5% in a buffer containing calcium and magnesium were incubated with mannancoated ELISA plates, C4 fragments, properdin and factor B were bound to the plates as well as the expected opsonic C3 fragments, C3b and C3bi.

Antibodies against Listerial Protein 60 Act as an Opsonin for Phagocytosis ofListeria monocytogenesby Human Dendritic Cells [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 2001
ABSTRACTHuman-monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDC) are very efficient in the uptake ofListeria monocytogenes, a gram-positive bacterium which is an important pathogen in humans and animals causing systemic infections with symptoms such as septicemia and meningitis.

Incorporation of Novel Synthetic Glycolipids in Liposomal Nanoparticles Affects Opsonization and In Vivo Clearance

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We prepared five glycosylated liposomal nanoparticles (G‐LNPs) to investigate the role of glycosylation and protein corona in modulating the in vivo behavior of G‐LNPs. We show that IgG and complement C3 adsorption enhanced liposomal nanoparticle clearance, with IgG promoting subsequent C3 binding.

Expression of Ciona intestinalis variable region-containing chitin-binding proteins during development of the gastrointestinal tract and their role in host-microbe interactions.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Variable region-containing chitin-binding proteins (VCBPs) are secreted, immune-type molecules that have been described in both amphioxus, a cephalochordate, and sea squirt, Ciona intestinalis, a urochordate.

Visceral leishmaniasis patients display altered composition and maturity of neutrophils as well as impaired neutrophil effector functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Immunologically, active visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is characterised by profound immunosuppression, severe systemic inflammatory responses and an impaired capacity to control parasite replication.

Phylogenetic lineage and pilus protein Spb1/SAN1518 affect opsonin-independent phagocytosis and intracellular survival of Group B Streptococcus [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobes and Infection, 2011
Opsonin-independent phagocytosis of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is important in defense against neonatal GBS infections. A recent study indicated a role for GBS pilus in macrophage phagocytosis (Maisey et al Faseb J 22 2008 1715-24). We studied 163 isolates from different phylogenetic backgrounds and those possessing or lacking the gene encoding the ...

Signaling pathways required for macrophage scavenger receptor-mediated phagocytosis: analysis by scanning cytometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Scavenger receptors are important components of the innate immune system in the lung, allowing alveolar macrophages to bind and phagocytose numerous unopsonized targets.
