Glioblastoma of the optic chiasm
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2007Primary malignant gliomas of the optic nerve and chiasm are rare, and are usually rapidly fatal in adults. We report a 48-year-old woman with a glioblastoma multiforme arising from the optic chiasm. Choristoma of the Optic Nerve and Chiasm
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1992A 21-year-old patient with a biopsy-proved choristomatous malformation of the optic nerve and chiasm is presented. The patient experienced progressive unilateral vision loss and optic atrophy. A gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance image demonstrated chiasmal involvement that was not evident on computed tomographic scan or visual field testing.

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1970✓ In a series of 20 cases of glioma of the optic nerve, approximately 25% were successfully treated surgically. This series also confirms the observations of Taveras, et al., (1956) that 25% of patients thus treated obtain considerable additional improvement in vision after radiation therapy, and that another 10% derive minimal benefit.

Traumatic Disruption of the Optic Chiasm
Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, 2009A 27-year-old man developed a persistent bitemporal hemianopia after severe head trauma sustained in a high-speed motor vehicle accident. The initial brain MRI revealed hemorrhagic contusion of the optic chiasm. A brain MRI performed 4 weeks later demonstrated complete chiasmal transection, a phenomenon rarely documented with imaging.

New histopathological insights established the true neoplastic nature of optic nerve gliomas considered by most clinicians to be benign hamartomas.

Klinische Monatsblätter für Augenheilkunde, 2003Trauma of the optic chiasm has been reported but its incidence is low.Retrospective review of patients diagnosed with traumatic optic neuropathy between 1992 and 2002.Among 91 patients with a diagnosis of traumatic optic neuropathy, 10 showed evidence of optic chiasm involvement. All were males, the average age was 32 years (range 22-43).
