The impacts of high refractive errors on self‐reported visual function and visual concern

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To examine the association between refractive errors and self‐reported visual function and visual concern, considering self‐perceived present eyesight, concerns about vision, accomplishing less and limitations in daily activities in an eye‐healthy cohort.

Junctional sensitivity and atrophy progression rate of geographic atrophy secondary to age‐related macular degeneration

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To determine the relationship between the baseline junctional retinal sensitivity measured with microperimetry and the atrophy progression rate in eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age‐related macular degeneration. Methods In this prospective cohort study, patients with GA were examined with fundus autofluorescence (FAF ...

Clinical manifestations of dual‐gene variants in retinitis pigmentosa

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disease (IRD), whereby each affected individual typically harbours pathogenic variants in a single causative gene, yet the disorder exhibits marked genetic heterogeneity, with more than 100 genes reported to underlie RP.

Humanin Mitigates Aβ‐Induced Retinal Pigment Epithelium Injury via AMPK‐Beclin1‐Dependent Mitophagy

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 7, July 2026.
Humanin (HN) enhanced the clearance of Aβ‐accumulated mitochondria in the RPE while preserving retinal function and RPE barrier integrity. HN activated AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to phosphorylation of ULK1 and Beclin1, which promoted the interaction between Beclin1 and Parkin and their translocation to mitochondria.

The Effect of a Decrease in Intraocular Pressure on Optic Nerve Function in Patients with Optic Nerve Drusen

open access: yes, 2017
<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> The aim of the study was to compare optic nerve function in eyes with brinzolamide-reduced intraocular pressure (IOP) and the fellow eyes of patients with optic disk drusen (ODD).

Colorimetric analysis of eye fundus structures with multispectral retinography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The analysis of the eye fundus is critical to prevent retinal and choroidal diseases since most of them cause no symptoms at early stages. Treating them when the very first signs appear is crucial to avoid vision losses.

Foundation Models in Diagnosis of Ophthalmic Diseases: Construction and Application

open access: yesEye &ENT Research, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 45-58, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence holds promise for addressing the uneven distribution of medical resources across different regions. Compared with convolutional neural network models, foundation models offer significant advantages: on one hand, their pre‐training does not rely on massive labeled data; on the other hand, they possess the capability to ...

Pathways of Protein Secretion in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes: Molecular Mechanisms, Biological Functions, and Therapeutic Opportunities

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
This graphical abstract delineates noncanonical protein secretion systems across eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Eukaryotic UcPS covers four ER–Golgi bypass pathways, enabling rapid leaderless protein export via direct transmembrane translocation or vesicle‐mediated release.

Photodegradable Hydrogels for On‐Demand Modeling of Age‐Related Spatiotemporal ECM Deformation

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 27, 14 May 2026.
A light‐tunable PEG hydrogel enables on‐demand, spatiotemporal modeling of drusen‐like ECM bulges in the aging outer retina. By precisely controlling bulge size, the platform reveals how retinal pigment epithelium morphology adapts to topographical changes without disrupting actin cytoskeleton or polarity, effectively mimicking early ageing before ...
