Mitochondrial Optic Neuropathies
2019Mitochondrial optic neuropathies have a leading role in the field of mitochondrial medicine ever since 1988, when the first mutation in mitochondrial DNA was associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (DOA) was subsequently associated in 2000 with mutations in the nuclear DNA affecting the OPA1 gene ...

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is the most common cause of acute optic neuropathy after age 50, but may also occur in younger patients. The diagnosis is clinical and includes painless visual loss associated with a relative afferent pupillary defect and disc edema.

7 cases of leukemic ophthalmopathy were clinicopathologically studies. The present findings were as follows: (1) ocular manifestations were exactly parallel with the involvement of the central nervous system, (2) visual disturbance seemed to be caused mainly by neoplastic infiltration into the parenchyma of the optic nerve, compression of nerve fibers ...

Prior to the 1980s, glaucoma was defined as a disease involving progressive visual loss due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Although elevated IOP is now considered one of the major risk factors for glaucomatous damage, glaucoma is defined as a primary optic neuropathy; visual loss results from characteristic, progressive deterioration of the ...

Optic neuropathy as the first sign of a lymphoreticular neoplasm is rare. A 65-year-old man complained of initially transient and then progressive visual loss in the right eye for two weeks. Computed tomography demonstrated a mass in the region of the intracranial portion of the right optic nerve.

Our concepts of optic nerve trauma and its treatment are evolving. Traditionally, optic nerve trauma was thought of as the syndrome of blunt force to the forehead causing visual loss, but iatrogenic injury is increasingly recognized as an important source of optic nerve trauma. Our understanding of this trauma as a type of brain injury is also evolving.

Inflammatory Optic Neuropathies
Continuum, 2014The aim of this review is to highlight the clinical presentation of a variety of inflammatory optic neuropathies through a case-based format. While emphasis will be placed on optic neuritis, which represents the most common acquired inflammatory optic nerve injury, the cardinal clinical features of other demyelinating forms of optic neuropathy and ...
