Optical scattering in glass ceramics

Current Applied Physics, 2006
Abstract We analyse measurements of the optical extinction coefficient for fluorozirconate glasses containing a volume fraction of ∼0.2 of barium chloride nano-particles. We find that the glass ceramics are about a factor of six more transparent than predicted by Rayleigh scattering theory, based on estimates of particle sizes from X-ray diffraction ...

Ceramic films for optical applications

Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, 1994
Recent progress is reviewed on the wet chemical synthesis of films for optical applications. Specific attention is directed to planar waveguides and to electrooptic, non-linear optical and electrochromic films, including recent results obtained in our laboratories.

Optically Translucent Mullite Ceramics

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1993
The optical transmittance of pressureless sintered and of hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) mullite ceramics was studied in the near infrared (NIR), visible light (VIS), and the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum ranges. Both processing methods provided fine‐grained microstructures (mean grain size of 5–10 μm) with equiaxed grains and a narrow grain‐size ...

Technological Innovation in Optical Ceramics

Advanced Solid-State Lasers Congress, 2013
Polycrystalline Nd:YAG ceramics are now superior to conventional single crystals in terms of performance and laser output power. Technological innovations for next generation optics will be freely designable ceramic composite and SSCG single crystal ceramics.

Optically Transparent Ceramic (Review)

Glass and Ceramics, 2016
The fabrication particularities of optically transparent ceramic materials for different applications are examined. The technologies used for compacting and sintering transparent ceramics are described: cold pressing followed by sintering in different media, hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing, spark plasma sintering, and slip casting.

MOCVD of Magneto-Optical Ceramics

MRS Proceedings, 1993
AbstractBismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet, BixY1−xFe5O12 thin films have been epitaxially grown on a Gd3Ga5O12 (111) substrate at 750°C under reduced pressure (6 Torr), with a deposition rate of 20∼50nm·min−1 by MOCVD. The maximum value of Faraday rotation was −7.5×104deg·cm−1at a Bi-content of 2.5 atoms per formula unit.

Nanostructure of optical fluoride ceramics

Inorganic Materials: Applied Research, 2011
The real structure of samples of optical fluoride ceramics is studied by atomic force, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that the optical ceramic samples based on CaF2 have a lamellar structure, and the distance between lamellae is 25–50 nm. Most likely, lamellae have a twin nature.

Electro-optic Ceramics and Devices

2020
Ceramics are one of the newest classes of electro-optic materials finding increasing use in such applications as optical shutters, modulators, displays, color filters, image storage devices, and linear gate arrays for optical data processing. Electro-optic materials provide the medium by which electrical information can be transformed into optical ...

Characterization of ALON optical ceramic

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
ALONTM Optical Ceramic is a durable window material for UV, Visible and Mid IR window and dome applications. The mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of ALON products produced commercially by Surmet Corporation have been measured and this new data will be presented. Comparisons to previously measured data will be made.

Thermo-optic quality assessment of doped optical ceramics

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
The use of optical quality ceramics for laser applications is expanding, and with this expansion there is an increasing need for diagnostics to assess the quality of these materials. Ceramic material with flaws and contaminants yields significantly less efficient performance as laser gain media and can generate excessive amounts of waste heat.
