Energy efficiency of hybrid optical switching

2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2012
Hybrid optical switching (HOS) has the potential to provide highly efficient operation through combining various switching paradigms and different implementation options within the same network. The flexibility of choosing between circuit, packet or burst switching and electronic or optical implementation results in an improvement in both energy and ...

Efficient optical waveguide switch/amplitude modulator

Optics Letters, 1978
An electro-optical, directional coupler switch is demonstrated that requires only a 3-V drive. Used as an amplitude modulator, the device operates at data rates in excess of 100 Mbit/sec (return-to-zero format) and has an extinction ratio of 13 dB and a 1-mW/Mbit/sec figure of merit.

Efficient Fresnel x-ray optics made simple

Applied Optics, 2007
A practical design for upcoming spaceborne x-ray telescopes with ultrahigh angular resolution is proposed. Particular attention is directed to technological simplicity and robust as well as cheap components. Based on dispersion corrected Fresnel lenses, an optimized arrangement will be identified with respect to the instrumental sensitivity for a given

Optical Efficiency Factors for Concentric Spheres

Applied Optics, 1967
Extinction, scattering, and absorption efficiency factors for a concentric sphere of a nonlight absorbing nucleus (m = 1.5) and an absorbing shell (m = 1.95 - 0.66i) were calculated based on the theory of Aden and Kerker. For small size parameters (v < 1), the magnitude of the extinction efficiency factor is markedly affected by the shell thickness. An

Detection efficiency of coherent optical radar

Applied Optics, 1984
Using the Huygens-Fresnel principle, the detection efficiency of a coherent optical radar is formulated. This formulation includes the effect of misalignment between the signal field and the local oscillator field. In the far-field case, the detection efficiency of a diffuse target is approximately half that of a glint target when the transmitter and ...
