Optical Fiber Sensing Solutions
2017Optical fibers have revolutionized communications industry and since the early 1970s have become the communications medium of choice for telephones, Internet, cable television, security cameras, utility, and industrial networks. Enormous information transmission capacity of the optical fibers combined with additional advantages, such as low losses ...

Chemical sensing with microbent optical fiber
Optics Letters, 2001We propose and demonstrate the possibility of using a permanently microbent bare optical fiber for detecting chemical species. Two detection schemes, viz., a bright-field detection scheme (for the core modes), and a dark-field detection scheme (for the cladding modes) have been employed to produce a fiber-optic sensor.

Low-noise fiber-optic rotation sensing
Optics Letters, 1981A major source of noise in fiber-optic Sagnac interferometers was identified to be the fluctuation of the phase of Rayleigh backscattering resulting from minute temperature variations and vibration. This noise can be reduced either by introducing a phase modulation into the fiber ring or by the use of a low-coherence source. A noise-equivalent rotation

Side-hole fiber for fiber-optic pressure sensing
Optics Letters, 1986An optical fiber whose structure is similar to that of the PANDA fiber, but with two open channels in the place of the stress members, is investigated. Variations of the internal or external gas pressure permit tuning of the fiber birefringence (10−4 rad m−1 Pa−1) over a wide range, including sign reversal, and application as a pressure sensor.

Fiber-Optic Chemical Sensing With Infrared-Transmitting Optical Fiber
SPIE Proceedings, 1990Infrared transmitting heavy metal fluoride optical fiber has been used to separate a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer from a remote measurement point. Several types of remote sensors have been developed for concentration measurements. Remote transmission cells connected to fiber cables have been used to measure near-infrared spectra of ...

Optical Fiber Sensing Principles
2019This chapter presents a broad view of some of the published and most used techniques and schemes for sensing with polymer optical fibers (POF), and presents a small part of the sensing devices using POF since the same techniques can be used to measure several different parameters with slight modifications.
