Analysis of Optical Integration between Si3N4 Waveguide and a Ge-Based Optical Modulator Using a Lateral Amorphous GeSi Taper at the Telecommunication Wavelength of 1.55 µm

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
We report on the theoretical investigation of using an amorphous Ge0.83Si0.17 lateral taper to enable a low-loss small-footprint optical coupling between a Si3N4 waveguide and a low-voltage Ge-based Franz−Keldysh optical modulator on a bulk Si ...

Optimization of optical data transmitters for 40-Gb/s lightwave systems using frequency resolved optical gating [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The measurement technique of frequency resolved optical gating has been used to optimize the phase of a 40-GHz train of optical pulses generated using a continuous-wave laser gated with an external modulator. This technique will be vital for optimization

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Y-branch optical modulator [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 1991
To characterize z-cut Ti:lithium niobate Y-branch optical modulators, numerical simulations are performed showing that high on/off ratios are attainable without special Y-junction asymmetries or long electrodes. The effective index and 2-D finite difference beam propagation methods were used for the simulations. A modulator with a 2 deg.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Nonlinear optical response of thermally stable perovskite for near-infrared optical modulator

open access: yesJournal of Materiomics
Metal halide perovskite has generated significant attention due to its high optical absorption coefficient, the tunability of bandgap, and its solution processing properties, all of which have led to a range of applications including solar cells ...

Compact thermally tunable silicon racetrack modulators based on an asymmetric waveguide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A compact wavelength-tunable 10-Gb/s silicon racetrack modulator with integrated thermo-optic heater is demonstrated by using a waveguide with an asymmetric cross section, combining the compact footprint of microdisk modulators with the design simplicity

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Integrated silicon carbide electro-optic modulator

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Electro-optic modulator is used to encode electrical signals onto light. Here the authors demonstrate an electro-optic modulator, based on Silicon Carbide, which can be useful for quantum and optical communications.
