Observation of optical pumping of mesospheric sodium
Optics Letters, 1991We have transmitted 0.5890-nm laser produced sodium resonance radiation vertically into the earth’s atmosphere and have observed that the amount of radiation backscattered from the 90-km altitude sodium layer depends on the polarization of the transmitted laser radiation.

Abstract Radiofrequency spectroscopy has been extended to positive ions with S ground states by means of optical pumping. The ions are stored in buffer gases or ion traps and are polarized directly by optical pumping or indirectly by spin exchange, change exchange, or Penning ionization with optically pumped atoms.
