Stability of vortex solitons in a photorefractive optical lattice [PDF]
Stability of off-site vortex solitons in a photorefractive optical lattice is analyzed. It is shown that such solitons are linearly unstable in both the high and low intensity limits. In the high-intensity limit, the vortex looks like a familiar ring vortex, and it suffers oscillatory instabilities.

Integrated optical vortex microcomb
The explorations of physical degrees of freedom with infinite dimensionalities, such as orbital angular momentum and frequency of light, have profoundly reshaped the landscape of modern optics with representative photonic functional devices including optical vortex emitters and frequency combs.

Vortex solitons in moiré optical lattices
We show that optical moiré lattices enable the existence of vortex solitons of different types in self-focusing Kerr media. We address the properties of such states both in lattices having commensurate and incommensurate geometries (i.e., constructed with Pythagorean and non-Pythagorean twist angles, respectively), in the different regimes that occur ...

Fundamental and vortex solitons in a two-dimensional optical lattice [PDF]
Fundamental and vortex solitons in a two-dimensional optically induced waveguide array are reported. In the strong localization regime, the fundamental soliton is largely confined to one lattice site, while the vortex state comprises of four fundamental modes superimposed in a square configuration with a phase structure that is topologically equivalent

Visualizing a dilute vortex liquid to solid phase transition in a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystal [PDF]
Using high sensitivity magneto-optical imaging we find evidence for a jump in local vortex density associated with a vortex liquid to solid phase transition just above the lower critical field in a single crystal of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. We find the regions of the sample where the jump in vortex density occurs are associated with low screening currents.

Radially symmetric and azimuthally modulated vortex solitons supported by localized gain [PDF]
We discover that a spatially localized gain supports stable vortex solitons in media with cubic nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. The interplay between nonlinear losses and gain in amplifying rings results in suppression of otherwise ubiquitous azimuthal modulation instabilities of radially symmetric vortex solitons.

Optical vortex-induced forward mass transfer: manifestation of helical trajectory of optical vortex [PDF]
The orbital angular momentum of an optical vortex field is found to twist high viscosity donor material to form a micron-scale 'spin jet'. This unique phenomenon manifests the helical trajectory of the optical vortex. Going beyond both the conventional ink jet and laser induced forward mass transfer (LIFT) patterning technologies, it also offers the ...

Vortex formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating deep optical lattice [PDF]
We study the dynamics of vortex nucleation and lattice formation in a Bose--Einstein condensate in a rotating square optical lattice by numerical simulations of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. Different dynamical regimes of vortex nucleation are found, depending on the depth and period of the optical lattice.

Theory of Optical Trapping by an Optical Vortex Beam [PDF]
We propose a theory to explain optical trapping by optical vortices (OVs), which are emerging as important tools to trap mesoscopic particles. The common perception is that the trapping is solely due to the gradient force and that it may be characterized by three real force constants.

Optical vortex soliton with self-defocusing Kerr-type nonlocal nonlinearity [PDF]
We develop one numerical method to compute the optical vortex soliton with self-defocusing Kerr-type nonlocal nonlinearity. With the numerical simulation method, the propagation and interaction properties of such optical vortex solitons are investigated.
