Coordination of plant hydraulic and photosynthetic traits: confronting optimality theory with field measurements. [PDF]
Summary Close coupling between water loss and carbon dioxide uptake requires coordination of plant hydraulics and photosynthesis. However, there is still limited information on the quantitative relationships between hydraulic and photosynthetic traits ...

Mapping the global distribution of C4 vegetation using observations and optimality theory. [PDF]
Plants with the C4 photosynthesis pathway typically respond to climate change differently from more common C3-type plants, due to their distinct anatomical and biochemical characteristics. These different responses are expected to drive changes in global

This article introduces the Optimality theory (=OT). OT has been an influential development within generative linguistics since early nineties . Although OT was initially developed as a phonological theory, it soon received acceptance in morphology and ...

Learnability in Optimality Theory
In this article we show how Optimality Theory yields a highly general Constraint Demotion principle for grammar learning. The resulting learning procedure specifically exploits the grammatical structure of Optimality Theory, independent of the content of substantive constraints defining any given grammatical module.

Nucleus Survey in Some Syntactic Phrases Based on Optimality Theory; A Case Study of a Deaf Student's Speech [PDF]
In recent years, a constraint-based framework adapted from Optimality Theory to describe and [1]analyses Speech language disordes. This article describes the syntactic structure of student “A” who is a persian male deaf student, based on violation ...

Optimizing over subsequences generates context-sensitive languages
Phonological generalizations are finite-state. While Optimality Theory is a popular framework for modeling phonology, it is known to generate non-finite-state mappings and languages. This paper demonstrates that Optimality Theory is capable of generating

An Optimality-Theoretic Account of Partial Nasal Assimilation in the Recitation of the Holy Qur’an [PDF]
Recitation of the Holy Qur’an has its own phonological features. This paper discusses the two types of partial nasal place assimilation known as ‘Ikhfaa’ and ‘Iqlaab’ in Arabic.

An Analysis Based on Optimality about Vowel Reduction to Resolve Hiatus in Kurdish and Persian [PDF]
The present study deals with hiatus resolution through vowel reduction in Kurdish and Persian based on OT phonology. A collection of movies, TV series, and written texts formed the corpus of the study.

A theory of demographic optimality in forests
Carbon uptake by the land is a key determinant of future climate change. Unfortunately, Dynamic Global Vegetation Models have many unknown internal parameters which leads to significant uncertainty in projections of the future land carbon sink.
