Repair strategies in labial dissimilation: diminutive formations in Xitsonga

open access: yesStellenbosch Papers in Linguistics Plus, 2014
This paper presents phonological processes in Xitsonga diminutives. The round vowels /u/ and /o/ are changed into the glide [w] to avoid vowel hiatus.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Hiatus resolution in Xitsonga

open access: yesStellenbosch Papers in Linguistics Plus, 2017
Vowel hiatus is dispreferred in many languages of the world. Xitsonga, an understudied cross-border southern Bantu language spoken in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, employs a set of four hiatus resolution strategies: glide formation ...

Constraint summation in phonological theory

open access: yesJournal of Language Modelling, 2021
The classical constraints used in phonological theory apply to a single candidate at a time. Yet, some proposals in the phonological literature have enriched the classical constraint toolkit with constraints that instead apply to multiple candidates ...

Phonological derivation in optimality theory [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 15th conference on Computational linguistics -, 1994
Optimality Theory is a constraint-based theory of phonology which allows constraints to be violated. Consequently, implementing the theory presents problems for declarative constraint-based processing frameworks. On the basis of two regularity assumptions, that candidate sets are regular and that constraints can be modelled by transducers, this paper ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Optimality and the Theory of Value

open access: yesJournal of Economic Theory, 1994
Let \(X_i\subset \mathbb{R}^q\) be the consumption set of the consumer \(i\) \((= 1,2,\dots, m)\). The complete and transitive preference relation \(\lesssim_i\) of the consumer \(i\) is represented by a continuous utility function \(u_i: X_i\to \mathbb{R}\). \(Y\) denotes the total production set of the economy. A pair \((x^*, p^*)\in \left(\prod^m_{i=

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Optimality and duality in set-valued optimization utilizing limit sets

open access: yesOpen Mathematics, 2018
This paper deals with optimality conditions and duality theory for vector optimization involving non-convex set-valued maps. Firstly, under the assumption of nearly cone-subconvexlike property for set-valued maps, the necessary and sufficient optimality ...

Avoiding stress on non-lexical material in nouns and verbs: predictable verb prosody in Serbo-Croatian stress standard varieties

open access: yesLinguistics, 2023
We consider two asymmetries reported in the literature on word prosodic systems: the tendency to allow more prosodic contrast in nouns than in verbs and the tendency to avoid stress on functional material.
